Epic Games Store manager admits the PC marketplace sucks, but major features are finally coming soon

For many computer game enthusiasts, the Epic Games Store serves as a hub offering fantastic free titles and select exclusives. The majority of other content is divided between Steam and GOG. (Amazon’s launcher doesn’t seem to be popular among gamers.)

In an effort to establish a stronger presence in the PC gaming market, the head of Epic Games’ storefront, Steve Allison, openly acknowledged that the current user experience leaves something to be desired.

Epic Games Store improvements are finally coming

At the State of Unreal 2025 exhibition, where we caught our first glimpse of The Witcher 4, Allison emphasized that despite years spent constructing the store on PC, there’s still a lot more to accomplish in order to offer an exceptional, top-tier experience.

Allison shared that long-awaited features will soon be available on the rival platform to Steam. After a prolonged wait, significant features like pre-loading games, gifting them, and others will be arriving at the online marketplace in the near term.

After long attempts to challenge Steam’s grandeur, Allison unveiled plans to incorporate essential functionalities like “cross-game voice chat, text chat, and party systems, as well as powerful invite options for external games” into their still developing platform.

Nevertheless, one significant drawback of the Epic Games Store lies in its fundamental aspects, such as speed and performance. Navigating through an extensive library of games is noticeably slower than on Steam, and the store sometimes freezes at inconvenient times. Additionally, a persistent cloud syncing glitch can be quite exasperating.

As a passionate supporter, I can share that the team behind Epic Games Store is dedicating significant effort towards enhancing our beloved store’s user experience through continuous updates on the launcher. It’s exciting to anticipate these improvements and I hope we won’t have to wait much longer for them to go live!

From personal experience as a frequent user of the Epic Games Store, I’ve always found it puzzling why there’s so much negative sentiment towards it. To me, having an additional launcher on my PC isn’t really a big deal. However, compared to Steam, the store’s user experience leaves a lot to be desired, and it seems surprising that Epic didn’t work on improving it sooner.
