During its Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event, Nintendo showcased numerous third-party and indie gaming reveals for a full day. One unexpected unveiling was from Devolver Digital and Dodge Roll, who disclosed that they are developing a sequel to the 2016 game, Enter the Gungeon. Remarkably, this upcoming title appears to be exclusively available on the Switch 2 console.
In contrast to the initial game’s retro 2D pixel art sprites, Enter the Gungeon 2 is ditching its traditional look and adopting a fresh 3D art style instead. Despite this change, it appears that the game will still maintain the essence of the original – a captivating roguelike shooter experience that gained popularity upon release. As players delve into the game, they’ll recognize familiar locales as they blast through randomly generated levels. New characters are set to join the adventure, with some classic heroes also making a comeback.
According to Creative Director Dave Crooks, who spoke during the Nintendo Switch 2: Partner Spotlight segment of the Switch 2 Direct, we’re continuing to develop the game and look forward to giving you more updates in the time ahead.
Back in 2016, The Gungeon original game was delightful according to Shacknews’ initial review. While its spinoff, Exit the Gungeon, didn’t quite reach those same heights, it was still enjoyable. Enter the Gungeon 2 is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026 as a console exclusive, but will also be available on PC. Stay tuned to Shacknews and check our pre-order guide for updates about its upcoming release date. We’ll have more details on the Switch 2, which is set to launch on June 5.
