Emio - The Smiling Man has detectives hunting a bizarre urban legend

As a long-time fan of detective games and urban legends, I must say that Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club has me absolutely hooked! With its intriguing blend of crime drama and folklore, this game is an exciting dive into the world of mysteries that I can’t seem to get enough of.

As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for Famicom Detective Club: Emio – The Smiling Man, releasing this month! It’s been nearly 27 years since we’ve had a new installment in the series, but lead producer Yoshio Sakamoto (famed for his work on Metroid) is bringing us an entirely fresh tale. Intriguingly, Emio explores how urban legends intertwine with real-life murders, challenging players to separate fact from fiction in unraveling the crime. I was fortunate enough to play through the prologue and opening chapter, and let me tell you – this case is shaping up to be a thrilling exploration of urban folklore and crime drama!

Back on the beat

In “Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club,” we once again assume the role of an assistant detective at the Utsugi Detective Agency, which we can name ourselves at the start of each case. Working alongside fellow assistant Ayumi, our task is to aid Detective Utsugi in resolving whatever mystery he encounters. The latest case is particularly unsettling as a young boy’s body is discovered strangled near a pump station in the countryside close to Koufuku City. A paper bag covers his head with a smiley face drawn on it, but what makes this case even more chilling is that Detective Utsugi recalls similarities to a series of murders that took place 18 years ago.

Introduce the enigma of Emio – The Grinning Man into this puzzle. According to folklore, when a girl is weeping all by herself, The Grinning Man might materialize. He extends an eternal smile, but tragically ends their life and leaves a bag with a grinning mask on their head. This legend infuses the case with intrigue as the specifics of the recent murder, the slayings from 18 years ago, and the tale of Emio intersect in an unsettling fashion. The plot thickens even further as the initial chapter unfolds.

The compelling cast of characters in Emio’s opening chapter contributes significantly to the storyline. Detective Utsugi, alongside his assistant Ayumi, reappear intriguingly, while familiar faces return as well. However, we are introduced to newcomers such as Inspector Kamoda, an old friend of Utsugi, and detectives Kuze and Kamihara. The tough-as-nails detective Kuze adheres strictly to the rules and has little patience for those who hinder her, even the protagonist and her partner. Her partner, Kamihara, or “Dice” as he prefers to be called, is a peculiar character who seems to have a keen eye but often appears carefree. Both characters appear enigmatic and seem to conceal more than they reveal during their initial encounters, leaving me eager to explore further aspects of their stories and secrets.

In this new version, elements of gameplay and story progression from the original Famicom Detective Club games have been polished, but not so much that they’re completely different. Throughout the game, you’ll often need to pick the right choice to uncover new details and advance the plot. This could involve questioning people about crucial matters, listening carefully to their responses, examining surroundings for hints and information, or even having the main character think aloud (which can sometimes provide a clue as to what action to take next). Players who experienced the remade Famicom Detective Club games in 2021 should find themselves feeling comfortable with this updated version.

The graphics have experienced an intriguing upgrade too. The settings appear skillfully drawn and the characters are semi-animate with fully voiced dialogues. In simpler terms, they’ve been designed as 2.5D models for this version, allowing them to express emotions and gestures dynamically while speaking throughout the game. This is a significant improvement compared to even the remastered versions. Additionally, their actions and voices have effectively pulled me into the mystery more swiftly.
