Emily in Paris season 4 part 1 is the season we've been waiting for

As a seasoned gamer of life with over two decades under my belt and a soft spot for romantic comedies that don’t take themselves too seriously, I must say that Emily in Paris has been an unexpected delight in these trying times. When the show premiered back in 2020, it was like a breath of fresh air amidst the chaos, even if some critics couldn’t quite wrap their heads around its charm.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead from Emily in Paris season 4 part 1.

As a gamer, I vividly remember when “Emily in Paris” debuted last October 2020, serving as a charming escape from an extremely tough period (let’s be honest, that was quite the understatement). The response to this Netflix original romantic comedy series was diverse, with critics unsure of how to evaluate it and viewers dismissing it as questionable fluff.

Despite not being hindered, the show continued to make a significant impact, garnering a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmys. (I can’t help but be proud that this recognition came our way. The nomination may have been met with skepticism, but it was a triumph for romantic comedy television!) Clearly, Emily in Paris has struck a chord and the series created by Darren Star remains steadfast to its unique identity.

As a gaming enthusiast, diving back into the world of “Emily in Paris” for its fourth season feels like leveling up. The series kicked off on August 15 with a double dose of excitement, and since then, it’s been all fun and games. It’s taken on board reasonable feedback to make minor enhancements without losing sight of its primary objective: to entertain us. So far, season 4 part 1 is delivering on the anticipation for Emily’s long-teased relationship developments, which have been hinted at since the very first season. It’s a rollercoaster ride I can’t wait to see where it takes us!

Emily and Gabriel are the right choice in season 4

Not every “Emily in Paris” enthusiast would concur, but having Emily and Gabriel end up together as a couple was an appropriate choice for the series in season 4. For me, it’s the season I’ve been eagerly anticipating since the show’s debut. I’ve enjoyed each season of the series, and who Emily dated never affected my appreciation. Yet, witnessing the show fulfill a long-standing promise that still resonates after multiple seasons is nothing short of enchanting.

Instead of assuming that viewers would eventually grow weary of the prolonged build-up of Emily and Gabriel’s relationship over three seasons, it seems unexpected that some of us remain hopeful for their union. Contrarily to what one might expect, I found Emily’s romance with Alfie quite engaging. In my opinion, this pairing possesses significant promise as a long-term match if not for the intense chemistry simmering between Emily and Gabriel.

For certain spectators, Emily’s decision to be with Gabriel instead of Alfie might lead to a reversal of feelings. However, that’s neither my case nor ever will be. The series, Emily in Paris, has laid out the situation, and they’ve executed it effectively. As Part 1 concludes, Gabriel confesses his love for Emily, and she reciprocates. There are more dramatic moments ahead with Camille’s secret yet to unfold, but once “I love you” is said, it can’t be undone. The show seems to be heading in a direction that won’t retract after making such significant strides forward.

Emily in Paris season 4 part 1 sets the stage for a perfect endgame

In the second half of season 4 of “Emily in Paris,” airing on Sept. 12, Emily finds herself taking a trip to Rome. New characters are set to arrive, among them an Italian man who could potentially become a romantic interest in future seasons. To abruptly separate Emily and Gabriel, her current love interest, would be a significant misstep for the show, considering everyone invested in their relationship. While complications are unavoidable, Emily has just found love with Gabriel, so introducing another temporary love interest at this point seems unnecessary.

While I thoroughly enjoyed season 4 part 1 for the focus on Emily and Gabriel, the recent episodes of Emily in Paris have made me realize that some of the supporting characters seem to exist primarily as plot devices for the pair. It’s time Alfie isn’t kept hanging in Emily’s world any longer, and Camille’s ongoing dramas are a distraction for Gabriel. In truth, both characters, despite our fondness for their actors, appear superfluous to the story being unfolded now.

Currently, I hope Netflix doesn’t come up with any ideas to conclude “Emily in Paris” prematurely as I enjoy the series a lot. At the same time, I don’t want it to overstay its welcome or fall into cliches. The first part of season 4 seems to be setting up the show’s final act nicely. Emily doesn’t necessarily need a romantic relationship for her storyline, but love has been a significant aspect since the beginning, and Gabriel has always been a key figure in that respect (I know Alfie fans might disagree). As for Mindy, her singing career is on the rise, and her relationship with Nicolas seems to be heading towards a definite conclusion as well.

In simpler terms, the fifth season of “Emily in Paris” should provide a satisfying conclusion without extending Emily’s romantic issues unnecessarily, learning from the drawn-out and less engaging seventh season of “Younger.” After four fantastic seasons filled with excitement, laughter, and memorable characters like Emily, Mindy, Sylvie, and the rest, we are approaching their heartwarming farewell, though it may be a bittersweet realization.

Watch Emily in Paris only on Netflix.
