Emily in Paris and 4 Netflix shows in danger of getting canceled in 2025

As a long-time fan and connoisseur of all things streaming, I can confidently say that 2025 is shaping up to be quite the year for our favorite shows!

As the New Year looms and you consider the status of shows still on the bubble for renewal or cancellation, you don’t want to tempt fate by forecasting their destiny. Given my ardent affection for the series, Emily in Paris, I wouldn’t dare declare that its journey ends with season 5 or faces an untimely termination. However, sometimes, one must face reality and make an honest assessment.

As a dedicated TV fan, I can’t help but notice the cycle that many shows go through: Over time, they either get canceled or wrap up with a final season. This is just part of the life cycle on the small screen, except for a select few outliers that manage to defy expectations. Unfortunately, some shows that don’t make it to veteran status might find themselves in precarious positions, while others, no matter how beloved, can still become casualties.

Despite the criticism it sometimes faces for canceling its original series (we’re still upset about some of them), Netflix surprisingly renewed more than 40 of its shows in 2024. As we move towards 2025, there are several Netflix series that may reach their final seasons or could potentially be discontinued. Keep in mind, these are just informed speculations based on Netflix’s past behavior and the direction of each show.

Emily in Paris

Are you hoping that “Emily in Paris” won’t receive a final season announcement next year? Not at all! But am I sensing one might be on the horizon? Regrettably, yes. Let’s keep it real. The show will be entering its fifth season in 2025, and in Netflix terms, that could almost be its eleventh season. Streaming shows, not just those on Netflix, often have a shorter lifespan, and “Emily” is nearing the end of its run.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but speculate about the potential future of Emily in Paris. Although it’s yet to be confirmed if season 5 will serve as the grand finale, given the writers are already mapping out the storyline, there’s a strong possibility that a sixth season might be on the horizon for next year. If so, I believe this final season would be the perfect conclusion to this delightful romantic comedy series.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say that Darren Star’s romantic comedy series “Younger” was an enjoyable ride for quite some time. However, after seven seasons, it felt like the storyline lost its charm and the finale wasn’t as satisfying as we had hoped. That’s not something I want repeated with “Emily in Paris”. I’d love to see Emily find her perfect happy ending while the show and I, along with the other devoted fans, are still invested. I believe Netflix understands this too, which is why they might be planning to wrap up the series by 2025, ensuring a fitting conclusion for all of us.

FUBAR

It’s fair to assume that despite FUBAR benefiting from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stardom, its action series debuted at an opportune moment on Netflix. Following closely behind were shows like The Recruit, The Night Agent, and The Diplomat – all featuring action and political intrigue. It seems this show found success by being in the right spot at the right time.

Following the swift order of FUBAR’s second season shortly after its debut in May 2023, production was set to begin. However, the entertainment industry faced an unexpected halt due to two labor strikes. Despite this, filming started in April 2024 and Carrie-Anne Moss became a part of the cast. By late summer, all filming had been completed. Yet, it seems many aren’t eagerly awaiting the show’s comeback.

As an ardent fan, I eagerly anticipate that FUBAR will once again deliver stellar results when it resurfaces in 2025. However, Netflix must carefully consider the balance between cost and performance, as well as its broader cultural influence, before making a decision. Regrettably, my prediction leans towards the action series having a limited lifespan, possibly concluding after its second season or even just managing to produce a third and final season, if it manages to reach that point at all.

Sweet Magnolias

In 2025, it’s possible that “Sweet Magnolias” may bring their story to an end. It’s not a question of the show not being cherished or well-received, but rather it seems baffling why it takes so long to produce and release new seasons for this series. By the time season 4 premieres in 2025, the show will have been in production since 2019, having completed just four seasons after all that time.

The show “Sweet Magnolias,” boasting a gifted main cast headed by its trio of namesakes, presents an engaging group of characters and is based on beloved literature penned by Sherryl Woods. However, there seems to be a gap between the series’ appeal and its broader cultural influence. In contrast, “Virgin River” is gearing up for its sixth season in December 2024 and has already secured a renewal for a seventh season. Unfortunately, no updates have been announced regarding further seasons of “Sweet Magnolias.

It seems that the showrunner doesn’t plan for Sweet Magnolias season 4 to be its last, as JoAnna Garcia Swisher stated it as her favorite season. If there isn’t an ending with season 4, we might visit Serenity one more time in season 5. Additionally, I’ll keep advocating for the series to become a movie franchise like the ones on the Hallmark Channel.

The Watcher

Friends, I must admit, the chances seem slim for “The Watcher”. Initially, it was only planned as a limited series, produced by Ryan Murphy. However, when the show premiered in October 2022, it garnered impressive viewership figures. Consequently, Netflix decided to invest further and renew “The Watcher” for a second season. Regrettably…

After its latest update, there’s been complete silence regarding the show. No news at all! I can’t believe it! Murphy was recently asked about the status of the show and all he said were three words that didn’t seem very encouraging: “I don’t know.” It seems like Murphy is dedicating more time to his projects under Disney and also the upcoming installment of the Monster anthology series on Netflix.

As a fellow enthusiast eagerly anticipating the return of “The Watcher” for its second season, I’d caution you to prepare for potential disappointment. Given that it shares a producer with another Netflix series, “Ratched,” which was renewed for a second season but never materialized before being quietly canceled, the same fate might befall our beloved show.

Girls5eva

Assuming that “Girls5eva” remains intact and Netflix doesn’t decide to end it later, miraculously this series has managed to avoid cancellation up until 2025. Thank goodness for that! This means there’s a glimmer of hope that the show could potentially be revived again. And let me tell you, we desperately need another season of “Girls5eva” right now more than any other time.

Despite Netflix rescuing the quirky comedy series from Peacock, debuting its initial two seasons and an exclusive third season, it failed to make a significant impact. The show didn’t crack the top 10 most watched TV shows in the U.S., which is usually a death knell for any series seeking renewal. However, this isn’t just an ordinary series.

Just like its band named Girls5eva, the show shares a similar resilient spirit and fighting nature since it hasn’t been officially declared as ended. There remains a flicker of possibility that a fourth season might materialize as a finale. Come on, Netflix! Honor your investment in this series and don’t let it end prematurely, especially considering it’s one of your top comedies (on par with Nobody Wants This, of course). However, the risk of cancellation is indeed very significant.
