As a long-time fan of Linkin Park, I find myself grappling with conflicting emotions upon hearing about Emily Armstrong‘s alleged ties to Scientology and her past support for Danny Masterson. On one hand, I am excited about the band’s comeback and the fresh energy that Armstrong brings to the table. On the other hand, the controversies surrounding her past associations have left me feeling a bit uneasy.
The connection between Emily Armstrong and Scientology has caused a stir since she was named as the new lead vocalist for Linkin Park. Rumors of her past affiliation with the church and support for certain convicted individuals have led to intense examination and criticism from fans. As Linkin Park prepares for their return, these links raise questions about Armstrong’s history and potential influence on the band’s upcoming trajectory.
Here’s a closer look at the controversies and how Armstrong and the band are handling them.
Why is Emily Armstrong getting backlash?
It’s been met with criticism that the latest singer for Linkin Park, Emily Armstrong, has been under scrutiny due to rumors about her connections to Scientology and her previous backing of Danny Masterson, who was found guilty of rape.
More recently, Armstrong – famed for her work with Dead Sara – has teamed up with Linkin Park, along with Colin Brittain. After a seven-year pause following the tragic demise of their former lead singer Chester Bennington, the band has reemerged. Initially, this news sparked excitement among fans; however, some now appear uneasy due to Armstrong’s past collaborations.
Back in 2013, Armstrong was present at the Church of Scientology’s 44th Anniversary Gala. She was spotted alongside well-known members such as John Travolta and Jenna Elfman (as reported by Scientology News). Whether or not Armstrong continues to be connected with the church, which is frequently referred to as a “cult,” is uncertain. However, her previous connection to the event has brought about some scrutiny.
The conflict grew more intense when Armstrong attended one of Danny Masterson’s preliminary trials in 2020. In 2020, a court found Masterson, a well-known Scientologist, guilty of raping two women and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. Many people, including Cedric Bixler-Zavala of Mars Volta, whose wife alleged assault by Masterson, have criticized Armstrong for appearing to support Masterson both inside and outside the courtroom.
In a statement that sparked controversy, Bixler-Zavala said, “Your followers might not know about your friend Danny Masterson, but he’s your rapist friend. Don’t forget the incident when your Scientologist associates blocked one of the Jane Doe’s from leaving an elevator, requiring court sheriffs to intervene and escort her away from your cult…” (paraphrased from Billboard)
Armstrong addressed the criticism on Instagram, acknowledging that she went to Masterson’s hearing due to a misplaced loyalty towards someone she thought was a friend. However, she admitted that she swiftly recognized her error in judgment. She said, “I tend to see the good in people, but I made a mistake with him. We haven’t spoken since.” Armstrong underlined her compassion for the victims and made it clear that she does not support or approve of abuse or violence against women.
The controversy surrounding Armstrong highlights the challenges public figures face when their past actions come under scrutiny. As Linkin Park moves forward, the band and Armstrong must address these concerns to rebuild trust with their audience.
