As a seasoned gamer of life with a heart for romantic comedies, I must confess that Emily in Paris has been my guilty pleasure since its inception. The rollercoaster of love between Emily and Gabriel has kept me hooked, with each twist and turn keeping me on the edge of my seat. But boy, did part 2 of season 4 take a dark turn!

WARNING: Major spoilers ahead from Emily in Paris season 4 part 2.

In the Netflix original series “Emily in Paris,” Emily’s love life oscillates between giving and taking when it comes to romance. However, in season 4 part 1, this delightful romantic comedy finally delivered what some of us had been eagerly anticipating for quite a while. After three seasons filled with back-and-forth tension, Emily and Gabriel officially became a couple, emphasizing both the long-awaited aspect and the commitment they made to each other.

Indeed, finding time together during this specific phase in their lives wasn’t without its hurdles, which made their relationship appear almost dreamlike. Despite Camille being pregnant with Gabriel’s child, they persevered. To be sure, Emily took the lead and made numerous concessions regarding her time and personal space.

In contrast, the unexpected twist at the end of season 4, part 1 of Emily in Paris, where Camille isn’t actually pregnant, casts a long shadow over part 2. The tension surrounding this secret and Emily’s upcoming romantic escapades with an attractive Italian businessman in Rome has left many fans of Emily and Gabriel feeling anxious as they dive into the fresh episodes. To put it simply, there are concerns about how these developments will unfold.

Here’s your final spoiler warning before we dive in!

Emily and Gabriel almost had it all in Emily in Paris season 4 part 2

Emily and Gabriel break up in Emily in Paris season 4 part 2

In the second half of season 4, Emily and Gabriel, who had officially become an item in part 1 of Emily in Paris, decide to end their relationship. Their relationship deteriorates when plans for a separate Christmas are made, with Emily returning to Chicago and Gabriel spending the holiday with Camille’s family in Megève. However, a change in Emily’s travel plans results in her unexpectedly joining the festive gathering in the mountains instead.

The situation intensifies as Emily, Gabriel, and Camille embark on a skiing trip together. Worried about her safety since he assumes she’s still pregnant, Gabriel chases after Camille down the slope. Meanwhile, Emily encounters difficulties managing her skis and suffers a rough tumble. Luckily, Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), an Italian heartthrob, comes to her aid. This charming Italian is later referred to as “the Italian Stallion” by Mindy.

Prior to hitting the slopes, Emily engaged in a talk with Timothée, Camille’s brother, which stirred some uncertainty within her about the intricate predicament she found herself in involving Gabriel, Camille, and the infant. Following the event on the mountain, she crumbled, confided in Gabriel about her emotions, expressing feelings of being a kept woman. Subsequently, she departed from Megève and headed back to Paris.

Emily and Gabriel are still collaborating on a project, but when Emily discovers the deception about the fake pregnancy from Camille, she tries to discuss it with Gabriel, but he isn’t receptive. When Emily mentions that he doesn’t talk to her much, he counters by saying they only communicate in English, never his language, French.

To be honest, it feels a bit unfair how Gabriel lashed out at me over our language differences, as this has always been a challenge between us. However, I can understand his perspective that these differences can lead to tension. But the way he went off on me, placing all the blame on me, just wasn’t right. What I can say for certain is that I always strive to make things work, to keep trying and finding solutions.

By the end of the season, Emily is chasing a relationship with Marcello, while Gabriel finds himself in an unrequited affection towards Genevieve. However, after receiving his star and learning that Emily will relocate to Rome to manage the new Agence Grateau office, Gabriel receives a congratulatory voicemail in French from Emily and unexpected advice from Alfie on winning her back. It seems he’s bound for Rome!

In season 4, Emily and Gabriel came very close to achieving everything they desired, even though some viewers might find their ongoing back-and-forth a bit tiring. However, the series skillfully portrays their conflicts in a way that feels authentic. It’s plausible that they could end up together by the series finale, but for now, Emily’s new romance with Marcello provides an exciting twist, and it’s fitting for Gabriel to have to compete for her affection this time around.
