In response to several old tweets reemerging, Emilia Perez, also known as Karla Sofia Gascón, the renowned actress who was nominated for an Academy Award, has published a fresh statement expressing her apologies.
Recently on social media (where Gascón’s X account is now inactive), she admitted to past posts that might have inflicted pain, and extended an apology to anyone who may have been affected by her tweets.
Gascón expressed that he wants to address the discussions stemming from his previous social media posts which unintentionally inflicted pain. Recognizing himself as part of an oppressed community, he empathizes with this distress and sincerely apologizes to those affected. Throughout his life, his mission has been to strive for a more compassionate world, believing that goodness will ultimately prevail over adversity.
What did Gascón say in her past tweets?
Over the last few days, users have been discovering old tweets from Gascón that dated back to 2020, where she commented on various topics such as the murder of George Floyd, Spain’s Muslim population, and even shared her thoughts on Christopher Columbus and the removal of his statues in specific locations.
In a tweet in 2020, Gascón expressed that the situation of a man passing off a fake bill while under the influence of methamphetamine, leading to his death during an arrest by a police officer who went too far, had turned the man into a martyr. He further stated that the incident highlighted the persisting beliefs among some people that Black individuals are without rights and that the police are murderers. According to Gascón, few people cared about George Floyd, who was a drug addict and hustler before his death, but his unfortunate demise brought these prejudices to light.
In a previous statement, Gascón expressed concerns about an increase in the Muslim population in Spain, stating that Islamic practices conflict with European values and infringe upon human rights. He further suggested that these practices ought to be prohibited, and he felt displeased by the rising number of Muslims migrating to Spain.
It seems like there are an increasing number of Muslims in Spain, judging by my observations. Every time I collect my daughter from school, I notice more women wearing headscarves and long skirts. Perhaps we’ll need to teach Arabic instead of English next year.
