Elon Musk Addresses X Outage, Calls It ‘Massive Cyberattack’

On Monday, Elon Musk‘s rebranded social media platform, previously recognized as Twitter, experienced substantial downtimes that affected approximately thousands of users in the US and UK. As a result, these users were unable to utilize the service for several hours. The disruption was later explained by Musk himself as a “large-scale cyberattack.

Here’s what happened and how Musk responded.

What did Elon Musk say about the X outage?

On Monday afternoon, Elon Musk spoke up on X to address the ongoing technical problems that the platform experienced throughout the day, which he referred to as an outage. In a recent post, Musk disclosed, “X is undergoing (currently experiencing) a significant cyberattack. We face attacks daily, but this one seems particularly resourceful. It’s possible that a substantial, coordinated group or even a country is involved in the attack. We are investigating.

During an interview on Fox Business, Musk clarified that the attack seemed to stem from Internet Protocol addresses associated with the Ukrainian region. He also mentioned, “However, there was a large-scale cyber-assault aimed at disrupting our X system, with the source IP addresses tracing back to the Ukrainian area.

The power failure started very early on Monday morning. Initial troubles were reported around 5:30 a.m. Eastern Time, and after a short respite, further disruptions occurred at 9:30 a.m. ET. Subsequently, another significant drop in service happened on Twitter at approximately 11 a.m. ET.

According to Alp Toker, director of Netblocks, a cybersecurity group focusing on internet connectivity monitoring, it’s believed that the service interruptions experienced by Elon Musk’s X were probably due to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. In simpler terms, Toker stated that the pattern seen during this incident matched previous instances where a platform is inundated with traffic to overload its servers. Moreover, he mentioned that this disruption, which spanned more than six hours, was one of the longest service disruptions ever experienced by X/Twitter on record. (As reported by BBC)
