What happens in the Predator: Badlands trailer?

In the upcoming “The Predator” movie trailer, we find ourselves in a future on an extraterrestrial world. Unlike past installments of the series, this film will flip the script by making the Predator character the hero instead of the antagonist.

In a future on a distant planet, a young Predator named Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi is shunned from his tribe. He forms an unexpected alliance with Thia, portrayed by Elle Fanning, and together they embark on a perilous quest to confront their greatest enemy. This is the basic storyline as described in the official synopsis.

According to Trachtenberg, as reported by Empire Magazine, “The main focus is on the creature, who takes the lead role. He’s still a formidable figure, but there’s an emotional depth that tugs at your heartstrings too. Developing a character that you can empathize with, yet remains incredibly intimidating, has been quite a challenge. Yet, it’s also been thrilling.

…The inspiration stemmed from seeking a crucial element of cinema, similar to what Prey achieved spiritually – expanding the franchise’s limits, providing an opportunity to cheer for a hero who is seldom championed. This evolved into a grand concept of supporting the Predator character itself.

Before directing Prey, the Predator film that premiered on Hulu in 2022 featuring Amber Midthunder, Trachtenberg had previously worked on 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016. Additionally, he has taken charge of episodes for both Black Mirror and The Boys.

A new animated film titled “Predator: Killer of Killers” is set to release prior to “Predator: Badlands.” According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, this movie features the Predator battling various types of fighters.

In 2024, Fanning portrayed Sylvie Russo in the movie A Complete Unknown. Her acting résumé also encompasses roles from Super 8 (released in 2011), Maleficent (2014), 20th Century Women and The Beguiled (both from 2016), among others.

20th Century Studios’ film “Predator: Badlands” is set for a theater release in the United States on November 7, 2025.
