Elio & 28 Years Later’s Box Office Couldn’t Beat How to Train Your Dragon

Over the weekend, “How to Train Your Dragon“, “28 Years Later”, and “Elio” dominated the box office conversation. “How to Train Your Dragon” maintained its reign in its second week, while “28 Years Later” made a powerful entrance as Sony’s horror revival. On the other hand, Pixar’s “Elio” underperformed, despite favorable audience feedback.

How to Train Your Dragon retains top spot against 28 Years Later and Elio’s box office

In its second week, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon maintained its top spot with a gross of $37 million, raising its domestic earnings to a total of $160.4 million. This animated sequel played in 4,373 theaters and saw a 58% decrease from its opening weekend earnings. IMAX screens accounted for approximately 11% of the weekend’s total earnings, contributing around $4 million. (According to Deadline)

28 Years Later, Sony’s newly released film, came in second place during its premiere, earning $30 million across 3,444 theaters. The movie made $14.1 million on its first day but saw a significant decrease of 38% to $8.8 million on Saturday. Sunday’s earnings were $7.05 million. The film received a B grade from CinemaScore and had a global debut of $60 million, equaling its production cost.

28 Years Later saw impressive preview earnings of $5.8 million on Thursday. Exit surveys indicated that 54% of viewers would definitely recommend it and gave it a 3-star rating on PostTrak. The majority, or 52%, of the audience were males aged 25 and over.

Disney/Pixar’s film titled “Elio” had its opening weekend at third place with earnings of $21 million across 3,750 theaters. This is the smallest domestic launch in Pixar’s history, surpassing the previous low set by Toy Story back in 1995 ($29.1 million). Despite receiving a good A rating from CinemaScore, it appears that marketing difficulties and delayed release may have impacted ticket sales.

Elio’s estimated box office earnings were $3 million. Its social media presence totaled 272.5 million, which is about 30% lower than the usual for original animated movies. AMC Dine-In Disney Springs in Orlando turned out to be its top-performing venue, generating $62,000. The audience breakdown revealed that approximately 39% were under the age of 12, and PostTrak reported a 59% definite recommendation rate.

Over the weekend, the overall box office earnings amounted to approximately $126.5 million – a decrease of 18% compared to the same timeframe last year. Lilo & Stitch contributed an additional $9.7 million during its fifth week, raising its total earnings to a whopping $386.7 million (as reported by Box Office Mojo).
