Elder Scrolls Morrowind modders says an official Bethesda remake wouldn’t make sense as modernising it “would ruin the game entirely”

The game “The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind,” although somewhat cumbersome, holds a special place in my heart due to its quirks. Despite its less user-friendly nature, this 24-year-old role-playing game continues to attract significant modifications such as complete transformations inspired by “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” and the continually updated project, Tamriel Rebuilt.

The Tamriel Rebuilt mod significantly expands the game by incorporating the mainland of the Morrowind Province, along with the initial island of Vvardenfell. This expansion includes unique quests, characters, items, adversaries, and other elements. However, imagine if Bethesda were to launch an official remake of the original game instead?

Morrowind modders aren’t concerned about a potential remake

During a conversation with PC Gamer prior to the launch of Tamriel Rebuilt’s Grasping Fortune expansion, the Tamriel Rebuilt team shared that it doesn’t seem feasible or necessary for them to create an official remake of the third major Elder Scrolls game.

Although Bethesda achieved great acclaim with their remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, they find little incentive to replicate this process for the studio’s earlier role-playing games. While such a move would undoubtedly yield substantial profits, it might compromise the quaint allure that these classic RPGs currently possess.

Since the launch of Morrowind in 2001, Tamriel Rebuilt has been under development in one form or another, with a dedicated volunteer team continuously working on this extensive mod. Although Skyblivion, the remake of Oblivion built using Skyrim’s engine, is expected to be released in full soon, the creators of the older mod anticipate that it will still take several more years for Cicero to complete their work, with an estimated finish date around 2035.

The mod’s creature animator expressed that they strongly believe we could finish the mainland of Morrowind, possibly even by this decade. They mentioned that we have a good amount of forward momentum. However, the outcome largely depends on how much effort is put into refining existing areas versus adding new regions.

The protracted development period for Tamriel Rebuilt demonstrates the relentless dedication of the series’ enthusiasts. In fact, these devotees have gone so far as to create an open-source engine rebuild of The Elder Scrolls: Arena, ensuring that Bethesda’s RPG saga will persist indefinitely.
