Elden Ring Nightreign’s faster, fightier Elden Ringing still works a treat on the Steam Deck

As a gamer, I’m excited about Elden Ring Nightreign, but it seems they might be swapping out the vast RPG exploration for a more fast-paced, whirlwind tour of tightly-clustered zones. Under the hood, though, it’s clear this is still the Elden Ring we know and love, just with a faster run speed and some brand new birdfolk characters to interact with. The system requirements, apart from a slight CPU upgrade, seem to be pretty much identical to the original game, hinting that these feathered creatures might not be as high-definition as we’d hoped.

Consequently, this offshoot performs just as smoothly on the Steam Deck, seeming to leverage the same SteamOS/Proton optimization that improved Elden Ring’s performance on Valve’s handheld particularly. My guide for adjusting settings in the base game can be applied here as well, although my experience of being chased by loothounds Nic and Ollie at breakneck speeds through Limveld suggests that some additional quality reductions might be beneficial. This is FromSoft at their fastest pace, so it’s wise to ensure the frame rates keep up.

If you’re only interested in the new settings, feel free to scroll down. However, it’s important for Deck owners to note that some of Elden Ring’s less appealing traits persist in Nightreign as well. For instance, despite having a 800p native resolution enabled, it only utilizes 1280×720 pixels on the screen. Additionally, there are instances of small text and icons that might need slight squinting, particularly on the default map view. However, I found these readable enough, and you’ll probably zoom in on the map to investigate potential looting or combat spots anyway.

Just as anticipated, this design is tailored to gamepad controls, fitting seamlessly with the Deck’s style. Even with its emphasis on co-op play, Nightreign doesn’t neglect handheld gamers. It offers an Offline Mode, similar to Elden Ring, which enables solo adventures when your Steam Deck strays beyond the reach of a dependable Wi-Fi connection.

As a gamer, let me tell you, Nightreign isn’t ideal for long car rides. In just an hour and 22 minutes, it completely drained my Steam Deck’s battery, leaving no juice at all – that’s only about 11 minutes shorter than the original game, played with half volume on both speakers and screens. However, when it’s running, it performs smoothly and feels great to play. Plus, once installed, it takes up less than 21GB of storage space on my SSD, which means I won’t need an extra microSD card for this game, but I might want a power bank to keep the fun going!
