The highly anticipated Elden Ring from developers at FromSoftware, titled Nightreign, is nearly here, and its publisher, Bandai Namco, is kicking off a series of character-focused promotional videos about the game.
In contrast to the customizable characters found in FromSoftware’s other Souls-like games, Nightreign features predefined archetypes, one of which is the nimble Ironeye, who excels with a bow. The standout feature of this character is the enhanced speed and fresh animations for various bow actions, adding an exciting twist to a weapon that has traditionally been effective but simple in Souls games.
In Nightreign, Ironye doesn’t have to stop to attack. Instead, he can shoot arrows while moving or even jumping. What’s particularly impressive in the trailer is that he can shoot an arrow right into an enemy at close range, then quickly pull it back as a counterattack.
Veterans of Dark Souls might find themselves reminiscing about Anor Londo’s Silver Knights, who were known for launching massive dragonslayer arrows while you navigated the rooftops. Iron Lynch shares some similarities with these knights, but his ultimate attack takes it up a notch – he fires a massive piercing bolt through a crowd, and in its wake, harmful wind magic follows.
The Ironeye class initiates with a respectful bow and is primarily focused on agility, though the trailer doesn’t emphasize it as a long-range character. Instead, they seem to be in the thick of things, frequently shooting arrows, but their gameplay appears more hit-and-run than providing stationary support. Additionally, keep in mind that this class has the unique ability to revive teammates at a distance (in Nightreign, you can revive fallen allies by giving them a good thwack).
Although Ironeye appears to specialize in bows, you can swap out for any agile weapons you find during gameplay. An interesting aspect is that when Ironeye performs their ultimate move, their quiver transforms into a bow, ensuring consistency with the attack regardless of whether you’re wielding dual katanas or another weapon.
As an ardent enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement as Elden Ring Nightreign is set to launch on May 30th! Not too long ago, PCG’s Morgan Park was given the exclusive opportunity to traverse through Limgrave for several hours. From his experience, it seems that this cooperative roguelike spin on the Souls formula will undoubtedly captivate some players while potentially leaving others a bit underwhelmed: “Nightreign pushes the boundaries of what we’ve come to know as the Souls game rules like no other title before it. In many ways, this game feels more like an incredibly ambitious mod, and thus far, it has proven to be quite impressive.
