As a longtime gamer, I’ve never been one for the Souls series from From Software – until Elden Ring came along. This game has managed to draw even skeptics like me into its captivating world, solidifying its place among gaming legends. The recently released DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, only served to cement Elden Ring’s status among other timeless classics.
Inspired by this success, From Software decided to create a night-themed cooperative expansion for Elden Ring – something the community has been eagerly waiting for. The result is Elden Ring Nightreign, a dream come true for many gamers. However, the joy of this new addition was quickly overshadowed by frustration as many players encountered a crash on startup at launch. This initial hiccup is just as disappointing as meeting an unforgiving Nightlord in-game.
Let’s work together to find a solution that will let us embark on this thrilling cooperative journey with our friends, rather than being left staring at a black or white screen.
Potential fixes for black and white screen crashes on launch in Elden Ring Nightreign
For cooperative soulslike enthusiasts, Elden Ring Nightreign could be a top-notch choice; however, it’s undoubtedly found itself in the ranks of From Software’s less successful titles. The game strays from the slow, deliberate world exploration that is characteristic of their work, and encounters problems with performance, matchmaking, and reusing assets. The absence of a 2-player mode doesn’t aid its case, though there’s hope it may be added later on. To compound matters, many players have reported crashes upon launching the game, resulting in either a black or white screen. The reasons behind these issues and their solutions remain unclear.
Often times, the solution isn’t straightforward due to the vast array of potential combinations in terms of hardware and software configurations on our computers, making an exact count almost impossible. Yet, there are common issues that may cause games not to launch properly. Here are some strategies to prevent crashes:
1. Check for updates: Ensure your operating system, graphics drivers, and game software are all up-to-date.
2. Compatibility mode: If the game was released before your current operating system, try running it in compatibility mode.
3. Run as administrator: Right-click on the game executable file and select ‘Run as administrator’.
4. Disable antivirus software: Temporarily disable your antivirus software to see if it’s causing any conflicts with the game.
5. Clean boot: Perform a clean boot of your system, which disables all unnecessary services, to help pinpoint potential conflicts.
- Besides the obvious “make sure that all your drivers are up to date”, there is one more ingredient that often poses problems – Easy AntiCheat. While its use was questionable in the original Elden Ring, this time having a person cheating in your team can definitely spoil the fun. That being said, EAC is not known for its stability and flawless work. First thing that you can do is to try repairing it according to the official guide. Alternatively, you may attempt deleting the “EasyAntiCheat_EOS.exe” and “EasyAntiCheat_EOS.sys” files that is located by default in “C:\Program Files (x86)\EasyAntiCheat_EOS” folder and then verify Elden Ring Nightreign’s file integrity via Steam. This should redownload the missing files. The latter part (verifying files) is also recommended by the guide released alongside Patch 1.
- What can be partially related to anticheat software is Process Lasso – a program that changes the way CPU prioritizes its tasks. While useful in many situations, it can be detected as inappropriate by EAC and prevent the game from starting. Try turning it off. Bear in mind that not only Process Lasso can cause this – any app that changes the default way your computer operates can lead to this issue, so try to think about any similar software that you may have and behaves this way.
- Since security features require TPM more and more, and it is even required to install Windows 11, some players suggest that enabling it in your computer’s BIOS can help in this specific instance.
- Another thing that was suggested by the community, who struggles with launching the title, is to run the game directly from install folder by starting “start_protected_game.exe” executable. Of course, doing it with administrative rights has better chance of working, as it can happen that an error with “CreateFile failed with 32” message pops up.
- Lastly, an interesting solution was found by a Steam Community member, who claims that installing the most recent Microsoft C++ Redistributables alleviated the problem with white screen on start. Make sure to use the official Microsoft webpage when downloading the Redistributables to avoid any possible issues or even malicious software.
It’s clear there are more options available. As a last step, you might consider filing a support ticket with Bandai Namco, either on their EU or NA website. Fingers crossed, you’ll be able to embark on the quest for Nightlords in the mystical land of Limveld. Although it may not reach the heights of other studio productions, this game is solid and, as our review indicates, definitely worth a shot. Best of luck!
