Elden Ring Nightreign Brings Back Mimics, Kind Of

Summary

  • Elden Ring Nightreign has brought back one of the Dark Souls series’ most iconic enemies, but not in the traditional sense.
  • The game reintroduces the Symbol of Avarice, a wearable Mimic head that drains your health, but helps you earn Runes faster.
  • In Nightreign, the Symbol of Avarice is a Talisman, which can be obtained by choosing Runes after you remove Libra’s health-sapping curse.

In the game Elden Ring: Nightreign, there are numerous nods to the Dark Souls series that aren’t immediately apparent, such as The Nameless King giving us a tough time once more. While it’s clear that the game includes several enemies, characters, and bosses from Dark Souls for amusement, Elden Ring: Nightreign has reintroduced an enemy that hasn’t been seen in the studio’s recent titles.

In Elden Ring, you’ll find many familiar elements from FromSoftware games, like hidden boundaries, toxic marshes, and the ever-present character named Patches. However, what sets Elden Ring apart is the absence of Mimics, a common feature in most FromSoftware titles. These sneaky creatures would make even chests appear harmless, but they could suddenly reveal sharp teeth and a massive tongue, ready to devour you for breakfast. Many players seemed to miss this iconic adversary in Elden Ring.

In Elden Ring: Nightreign, just like other games, the presence of Mimics isn’t an exception. However, one noteworthy and unexpected nod to Dark Souls we’ve spotted is the return of the Symbol of Avarice. This in-game accessory resembles a Mimic head, offering certain advantages, albeit at the recurring expense of your health.

To don the mask of a Mimic in this game, keep your fingers crossed and pray that Libra (one of the game’s Nightlords) reduces your health as you traverse Limveld. This could occur at any moment, even during other Nightlord’s expeditions. The only method to rid yourself of this effect is by spending 10,000 Runes.

Following that, you’ll have the opportunity to select a Boon of your preference. If you opt for Runes as a replacement for those you’ve recently lost, you will be granted the Symbol of Avarice Talisman. When activated, this talisman causes a gradual decrease in your health, provides a 20% increase in Runes from all sources, offers 60 additional item discovery, and crucially, allows you to wear a phantom Mimic head on your head, much like the helmet featured in the Dark Souls series.
