This afternoon, a buzz circulated online about an upcoming feature film for the critically-acclaimed game “Elden Ring,” produced by A24 Studios. But as the news spread, it seemed to vanish just as quickly. Needless to say, there’s quite a whirlwind of feelings surrounding this project, especially now that the initial chatter has been called into question.
In a recent development, Nexus Point News, an entertainment platform, published an exclusive piece speculating about a potential film adaptation of “Elden Ring.” Initially, the article suggested that production powerhouse A24 (known for movies like “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once” and “Moonlight”) would be involved. Additionally, it stated that Alex Garland, director of “Ex Machina” and “Civil War,” would helm the project. However, there were certain inconsistencies, such as Garland’s recent announcement about taking a break from directing. The intrigue surrounding this rumor heightened when the article was removed from their site.

It’s understandable that many fans are skeptical about the rumor of an Elden Ring movie, considering the game’s expansive world doesn’t seem easily adaptable to the screen. Some doubt that Alex Garland, with his background in indie projects, would do the story justice, while others have faith in him. The timing is interesting as the latest Elden Ring release, Elden Ring Nightreign, comes out on May 30th, making a film announcement now, though strategic, feels a bit unusual.
It’s intriguing to note that discussions about a film adaptation for Elden Ring have been ongoing. George R.R Martin, one of the game’s writers and the author of Game of Thrones, has shown interest, while director Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted at potential interest in 2024 during an interview with The Guardian. If the rumors are correct, A24, known for its exceptional work, could be a promising choice to handle such a project. Elden Ring isn’t the only adaptation A24 is working on, as Michael Sarnoski from A Quiet Place: Day One is bringing Death Stranding to the big screen. However, transforming the world of The Lands Between into a film is an ambitious task, so it will be exciting to see if these plans materialize or not.
