The performance by Ed Sheeran, known for his hit song “Shape of You,” on a street in Bengaluru, India, was recently interrupted by Indian law enforcement officials. This event has garnered considerable online attention, prompting the singer to share his experiences. At present, Sheeran is in India as part of the international phase of his extremely popular Mathematics tour. Here are all the details about the incident, along with comments from the authorities.
What happened to Ed Sheeran in Bengaluru?
A video clip featuring popular musician Ed Sheeran performing street music (busking) on Church Street in Bengaluru, India, was suddenly halted by officials. This incident, which gained significant attention on social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), ignited a broad discussion online about the topic.
As per NBC News’ report, during his performance of Shape of You, Ed Sheeran was wearing a white T-shirt and green shorts. Suddenly, an Indian police officer approached him. A video clip shows Sheeran’s friends attempting to prevent the officer from interfering, but he disconnected the microphone instead. This caused Sheeran to shrug and exit the area.
After the event, Ed Sheeran shared a message on his Instagram story, explaining his perspective and clearing up the situation.
We were actually allowed to perform there, you know. So, our presence and performance weren’t a spontaneous decision; we had previously arranged it.” [All is well.]
Despite what Ed Sheeran’s team claimed about having permission from Bengaluru authorities to busk, the central district police chief, Shekar T. Tekkannavar, disputed this in a statement to ANI. In the report published on X by the outlet, he stated otherwise.
A representative from the team responsible for organizing events approached me to ask if they could stage a performance on Church Street. However, due to the fact that Church Street tends to become extremely busy, I declined to grant them permission for the event.
He further added that this was the reason his officer asked Sheeran “to vacate the place.”
