Dying Light developer Techland is working on a new Call of Juarez, but its Star Wars-inspired RPG has been scrapped

Techland, known for creating Dying Light, is currently developing a fresh installment in the Call of Juarez series using the cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5 technology.

In my gaming world, with the completion of Dying Light: The Beast – a tantalizing glimpse into the franchise’s future – I’m now immersed in the creation of the next installment in our beloved cowboy series.

According to Insider Gaming’s report, it appears that the new Call of Juarez game has been under production for quite a while now. The latest installment in the series was the overlooked Call of Juarez: Gunslinger from 2013, but Techland reacquired ownership of their franchise back in 2018.

Currently, the studio working on a new cowboy game is progressing in its developmental stage. However, they’ve decided to halt production on two other games that were previously in active development. One of these shelved projects was a fantasy RPG, which reportedly drew inspiration from Lucasfilm’s renowned Star Wars saga.

Referred to as Project Cornerstone, the abandoned fantasy RPG had been under construction for quite some time, starting at least in 2022. This game was designed to grant players the ability to wield a force similar to Star Wars’ The Force, which they could use to move and manipulate objects, along with other special powers. One of these additional abilities would have given players the unique power to halt time itself.

Initially, Project Cornerstone was built using Techland’s proprietary Chrome Engine, which also powers games like Dying Light 2 and an upcoming spin-off titled The Beast. But the project later transitioned to the Unreal Engine, a move that appears to have led to some complications.

According to Insider Gaming, the project faced difficulties over several years because of unfavorable leadership choices, yet it remains unclear as to the specific reasons behind the cancellation of the game.

Currently, Techland is focusing most of its resources on the Dying Light series, as the upcoming game in the franchise is set to launch on August 22 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles. Additionally, other Dying Light games are being developed early on, leveraging the studio’s biggest achievement.
