Dwyane Wade has candidly discussed a significant health hurdle, disclosing that he was diagnosed with cancer. The esteemed former NBA player underwent an operation to excise a tumor from his right kidney. In his podcast, Wade delved into the emotional and physical odyssey he experienced during this period.
Here are more details about Wade’s diagnosis and surgery.
What happened to Dwyane Wade?
On January 30th episode of his podcast “The Why With Dwyane Wade,” Dwyane Wade publicly discussed his cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery. He disclosed that on December 18, 2023, he had a tumor removed from his right kidney. Wade admitted that he had neglected a routine physical examination. However, persistent health problems such as stomach pain and urinary issues ultimately led him to seek medical attention. During the checkup, doctors discovered a tumor on his kidney. Since a biopsy was deemed too risky, Wade opted for surgery to remove 40% of his kidney.
As a gamer putting off routine health checks since hanging up my basketball shoes in 2019, I was taken aback to discover that the growth was malignant. The revelation hit me hard, marking one of the most challenging moments in my life – a moment when my family witnessed my vulnerability for the first time. I confessed, “The ordeal of undergoing surgery was probably the first instance where my dad, kids, and wife saw me weak.” However, amidst the emotional turmoil, I drew strength from the unwavering support of my loved ones, particularly my partner, Gabrielle Union, and our children.
2023 saw Wade, formerly a professional basketball player, enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Since retiring in 2019, he has kept busy with entertainment production, commentating, and podcasting endeavors. Additionally, he joined part-ownership of the Utah Jazz.
