Dwayne Johnson Gives Filming & Story Update on Martin Scorsese Hawaii Crime Movie

Dwayne Johnson has given an update on the new Martin Scorsese Hawaii crime movie.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Johnson, Emily Blunt, and Leonardo DiCaprio are set to feature in a new Martin Scorsese-directed drama. As of now, the movie doesn’t have an official name, but it revolves around a powerful Hawaiian mob boss who amassed his empire during the 1960s and 70s.

What did Dwayne Johnson say about the new Martin Scorsese movie?

On The Pat McAfee Show, Johnson revealed that filming for the upcoming movie would start in the year 2026.

Johnson explained that Nappy Pulawa is often referred to as the “godfather” of Hawaii. He wasn’t a typical godfather, though; he was a powerful figure who ruled over all the islands but had to do so in a brutal, strategic, and intelligent manner. It’s important to note that during this time, Hawaii was a hotspot for organized crime groups like the Japanese yakuza, Chinese triads, Korean gangs, as well as American gangsters from Vegas trying to seize control. On top of that, American corporations were aggressively trying to take over Hawaii in the 1950s.

This man symbolized how Hawaiians and Polynesians felt during this era. As outsiders were flooding in, taking over Hawaii, dividing it up among different groups – gangs and corporate America – he stood up and said, “Enough is enough.” He fought back to reclaim control.

Johnson added, “We brought the concept to life. We met with Scorsese and presented it to him; he was captivated. He couldn’t believe this untold story existed…The thought of Scorsese telling this tale is electrifying; there’s no one quite like Martin Scorsese when it comes to gangster movies. He’s the greatest of all time, a true master. In the pantheon of directors, he stands tall. But what truly excites him about this project is the idea of a character who not only embodies the roles of a gangster, godfather, and ruthless man, but also stands up to reclaim what was initially taken – culture, land.

A release date for the new Scorsese movie with Dwayne Johnson has not yet been set.
