Dwayne Johnson Cast as Motivational Cult Leader in New A24 Movie Breakthrough

Dwayne Johnson has been cast as a motivational cult leader in a new A24 movie called Breakthrough.

Recently, Johnson collaborated with A24 for a film titled “The Smashing Machine.” Directed by Benny Safdie, this movie features Johnson as ex-wrestler and MMA fighter Mark Kerr, with Emily Blunt portraying Dawn Staples. The release date in US theaters is scheduled for October 3, 2025.

Currently, Johnson is resuming his acting career, joining the cast for the upcoming psychological thriller titled “Breakthrough.” The screenplay has been penned by Zeke Goodman.

At the dawn of the new millennium in Southern California, I found myself drawn into an intriguing tale about a disconnected young man who becomes ensnared by a captivating self-help guru. Beneath his alluring charisma lies a troubling propensity for manipulation, and as his methods become increasingly questionable, it’s revealed that he harbors a sinister darkness of his own. In the movie, Johnson is portrayed as a mentor-like figure, playing a secondary role. At present, further casting for the film is being arranged, but there’s no director assigned to the project as of now.

In a collaboration, Shiny Penny Productions led by Stacey Sher is teaming up with Seven Bucks Productions owned by Johnson and Dany Garcia, to produce the project titled Breakthrough. The executive producer roles are filled by Jacob Epstein and Justin Wolf from Lighthouse Management and Media.

In the year 2024, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson portrayed Callum “Cal” Drift alongside Chris Evans in Red One. He also lent his voice to Maui once more in Moana 2 produced by Disney. Currently, he’s collaborating with Martin Scorsese on a project titled The Smashing Machine, which will feature both Blunt and Leonardo DiCaprio. As of now, there is no announced release date for this film that revolves around a Hawaiian crime boss. Furthermore, Johnson will appear in a live-action adaptation of Maui, slated for July 10, 2026, within the remake of Moana.

A release date for Breakthrough has not yet been announced by A24.
