Dune: Prophecy Star Emily Watson Says Series Won’t Be ‘Childish’ or ‘Like Star Wars’

As a gamer with an insatiable appetite for sci-fi and fantasy narratives, I eagerly await the premiere of Dune: Prophecy on HBO and Max next year. With Emily Watson joining the cast as Valya Harkonnen, this prequel series promises to delve deeper into the expansive universe of Dune, a world that has captivated my imagination for years.

Actress Emily Watson, who starred in “Dune: Prophecy”, assures that the forthcoming HBO series will not resemble a child’s play or anything like “Star Wars”. Instead, it promises to offer a mature and distinct narrative experience.

The Dune: Prophecy prequel series is set to debut on both HBO and Max in November 2024. In this series, Watson portrays the character Valya Harkonnen. Alongside Watson, the cast includes Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen, Jodhi May as Empress Natalya, Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino, and others.

In conversation with Total Film Magazine, Watson elaborated on the intriguing moral depth that viewers will encounter in Dune: Prophecy – a quality that particularly captivates her.

Watson found it both thrilling and satisfying to venture into that realm, secure in the knowledge that I possessed the necessary abilities to create an authentic experience. It’s intriguing because it’s not juvenile or like “Star Wars”; instead, it offers moral depth, which adds to its appeal.

What do we know about Dune: Prophecy?

Set in the grand cosmos of Dune, penned by renowned writer Frank Herbert, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ delves into a period 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise, focusing on two Harkonnen sisters who struggle against forces that jeopardize humanity’s future. Their actions will eventually lead to the formation of the revered Bene Gesserit order as depicted in the novel ‘Sisterhood of Dune,’ authored by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Watson added that the Harkonnens appear more human and intricate than their representations in Dune and Dune: Part Two, being less exaggerated. However, she emphasized they remain a somewhat dysfunctional family.

She commented, “The series primarily revolves around the Bene Gesserit order, who are essentially a sisterhood. One of the main characters is part of this group, as well as the worlds they govern and their abilities… It’s quite intriguing.

As of now, the premiere date for Dune: Prophecy, created by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, has not been officially announced.
