Despite suggesting that it would take some time before he could direct the third installment, Villeneuve has now embarked on crafting the story for the eagerly anticipated third movie. Recently, he shared his inspiration behind accelerating the production of Dune: Messiah.

Based on Villeneuve’s statements, the overwhelming enthusiasm and admiration of fans towards the upcoming Dune sequel motivated him to revisit the series and wrap up his trilogy at a faster pace. In a recent conversation, he also suggested that Dune: Messiah will resume the story from a particular point once it is completed.

In conversation with Aidan Kelley from Collider at the Saturn Awards, Denis Villeneuve explained why he chose Dune 3 as his next venture. He mentioned, “Previously, I had planned to work on something else; however, during my summer break, an inspiration struck me to carry on with the story of Dune. I was deeply touched by the global response to Part Two from film enthusiasts worldwide.” He continued, “This sparked a hunger and a need in me to explore more of this universe and fulfill a sense of duty to conclude that tale.

Director Villeneuve elaborated on how Dune: Messiah will unfold post the conclusion of Dune: Part 2. He explained, “Chani’s heart is shattered,” and further stated, “This marks the start of the Holy War.” It has been confirmed by Villeneuve that Dune 3, which currently lacks an official release date, will be set 12 years after the events portrayed in the second movie.

Although he’s been providing optimistic reports, it’s important to note that Dune: Messiah is currently being scripted only. Given the intricate filming and post-production stages yet to be tackled, it might take more than a year for the project to finish. Consequently, movie enthusiasts should anticipate the release of Dune 3 around the year 2027.
