Dune 3: Denis Villeneuve To Direct Messiah, Hints At More Movies To Follow

As a die-hard fan of Dune, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Denis Villeneuve‘s upcoming directorial venture, Dune: Messiah. Having grown up reading Frank Herbert’s epic saga, I can attest to the sheer brilliance and grandeur of this universe.

Dune: Part 2 was a huge success, and continued the epic journey from Frank Herbert’s iconic .

Director Denis Villeneuve carefully crafted the initial novel into two films to stay true to the original content. Both parts received immense acclaim, not just due to their breathtaking visuals, but also for their compelling narrative and superb world creation.

Denis Villeneuve Will Direct “Messiah”, But It’ll Be His Last

In a fresh chat with Little Gold Men, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve shared some intriguing insights about the upcoming adaptation of Dune in cinemas.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to know he’ll direct the next film. While it might seem unusual, this third movie will actually be adapted from only the second book (the first two films were based on the original Dune and Dune: Messiah will be based on the third). So, I can’t help but wonder, what projects come after that?

According to Denis Villeneuve, this is his final installment of Dune, but the epic saga of Dune will continue to unfold on the silver screen.

I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books.

On the downside, it’s disappointing that Villeneuve’s interpretation of the books is coming to an end. However, allowing other filmmakers to step in can undoubtedly breathe new life into the series.

Until then, we are excited about the upcoming TV series Dune: Prophecy starting in November 2024.

It won’t be directed by Denis Villeneuve, but the trailer seems promising.

Dune Messiah: Villeneuve’s Script For Dune 3 Is Nearly Ready

During a press conference for Dune: Part 2 in South Korea, Villeneuve didn’t only talk about the upcoming movie to wrap up the first book’s story – still, hearing him say that he’s even happier with Part 2 than he was with the first (also amazingly well-made) movie, fans can only wonder just how epic the sequel will be.

Director Villeneuve also mentioned his readiness to carry on expanding the Dune universe on the silver screen, and he almost finished writing the script for Dune 3: Messiah. Although an official go-ahead hasn’t been given yet, given the captivating storyline left to cover, it seems highly likely they won’t hesitate to continue adapting the series – given how well-received Dune: Part 1 was, funding issues should be minimal.

Without spoiling anything, the third movie would adapt the second book in the series: (duh). The second book is a little shorter than the first one and focuses more on the characters as the world of Arrakis is already set up.

This implies that the storyline of Dune Messiah might be compressed into a single film, which is advantageous for people like myself who are eager to see the initial journey of Paul concluded swiftly on the silver screen.

If Dune Messiah gets the go-ahead (which I’m confident it will), there might still be a delay in the start of production as suggested by Villeneuve.

I don’t know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis. I might make a detour before just to go away from the sun. For my mental sanity, I might do something in between, but my dream would be to go a last time on this planet I love.

Is Dune Going To Be A Trilogy?

Let me pause for a moment – returning to the planet now, given that we have yet to fully explore the richness of six books based on Dune, and only barely touched its depths? That thought might be plausible, especially considering how Dune Messiah concludes – if you’re familiar with it, then you understand.

If you’re unfamiliar with Dune, it would be worth your time to learn more about it. You can either delve into the details or simply dive in to experience it firsthand, as I don’t intend to disclose any plot points here.

Villeneuve might choose to conclude his Dune adaptations after Dune Messiah for narrative reasons, and possibly because it provides a tidy conclusion. While there is certainly enough material for four books worth of story, ending at this point could offer a neat resolution to the adaptation.

“Go ahead and transform every book, Mr. Villeneuve, I won’t object at all. However, for the moment, let’s see Dune: Part 2 on March 1, 2024 first.
