Dune 2 Deemed Ineligible to Recieve Best Original Score Oscar Nomination

As a seasoned gamer with a profound appreciation for both gaming and movies, I must say it’s always a tad disappointing when rules get in the way of artistic recognition. Hans Zimmer, who crafted an exceptional score for Dune 2 that beautifully continues the narrative journey, finds himself in such a predicament.

Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune 2 won’t be eligible for any Academy Awards.

In March 2024, Dune: Part Two hit U.S. movie theaters. This film was directed by Denis Villeneuve and serves as a follow-up to the 2021 movie called Dune, while also being based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel with the same title.

Why can’t Hans Zimmer’s Dune 2 score be nominated for an Oscar?

Part Two has more pre-existing music than allowed by the Academy, making it ineligible for nomination in the Best Original Score category.

According to a rule set by the Academy, when composing scores for sequels or series across various media, it’s essential that no more than 20% of the score consists of previously used themes and melodies from earlier installments within the same franchise.

Hans Zimmer’s music for Dune 2 could potentially receive honors from organizations like the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA, and Grammys. Similarly, his work on Steve McQueen’s film, Blitz, might also be award-winning.

In the realm of storytelling, our goal is to support the plot and resonate with the audience,” Zimmer explained about his Dune score. “For Dune: Part Two, we carry on the tale that started in the initial half of the book right where we left off. The music was designed to grow and develop its themes and bring them, like the book, to a fitting conclusion, a plan from the very first note to the final word.

He stated, “I’m deeply honored by the collective effort we put into our work alongside visionaries such as Denis Villeneuve. This is our offering to an expansive, shared cinematic journey.

In the current lineup for “Dune: Part Two”, streaming now on Max, we have Timothée Chalamet portraying Paul Atreides, Zendaya stepping into the role of Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Stellan Skarsgård taking on Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
