Dream’s End Draws Near: The Sandman Season 2 Drops This Summer

Netflix has confirmed that The Sandman series will wrap up with its second installment, due for release this coming summer.

Although it had been previously acknowledged that a second season would take place, the fresh update provides essential information such as: episode names, a three-part release schedule, and an unexpected announcement of a bonus episode.

The Sandman: Release Schedule and Story Arcs

Season 2 will roll out in three parts:

  • Volume 1 (Episodes 1–6): July 3
  • Volume 2 (Episodes 7–11): July 24
  • Bonus Episode: July 31

Season 2 continues from where we last were: The Dream Corp’s overseer, Dream of the Endless (Tom Sturridge), having regained control over his domain, now finds himself grappling with the repercussions of centuries-long arrogance, anger, and neglect. According to Netflix’s summary, this is the essence of Season 2.

“After a fateful reunion with his family, Dream must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds… But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything.”

Season 2 will mix storylines from various original graphic novels, including popular ones such as ‘Season of Mists’ and ‘Brief Lives’. It will end with a bonus episode called ‘Death: The High Cost of Living’, which is inspired by Neil Gaiman’s 1993 spin-off miniseries. In this episode, the focus shifts to Dream’s sister, Death (played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste), as she helps a suicidal teenager navigate a crucial day in their life.

Here are the titles of all the episodes:

  • Episode 1: Season of Mists
  • Episode 2: The Ruler of Hell
  • Episode 3: More Devils Than Vast Hell Can Hold
  • Episode 4: Brief Lives
  • Episode 5: The Song of Orpheus
  • Episode 6: Family Blood
  • Episode 7: Time and Night
  • Episode 8: Fuel for the Fire
  • Episode 9: The Kindly Ones
  • Episode 10: Long Live the King
  • Episode 11: A Tale of Graceful Ends
  • Episode 12: Death: The High Cost of Living

The story will journey through different eras and dimensions, visiting ancient Greece, revolutionary France, and the magical world of Faerie.

This season of The Sandman introduces a host of fresh characters, broadening the mythos. Confirmed among these newcomers are Destruction (played by Barry Sloane), Puck (Jack Gleeson), Destiny (Adrian Lester), Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles), and Orpheus (Ruairi O’Connor), who is Dream’s son with Calliope. Additionally, characters from the Norse pantheon such as Thor (Laurence O’Fuarain), Loki (Freddie Fox), and Odin (Clive Russell) are expected to make appearances.

Bringing the Dream to a Close

Allan Heinberg, the showrunner, confirmed that the intention from the start was to compress Neil Gaiman’s extensive 10-volume story into just two seasons. This revelation comes at a time when there is increasing conjecture about the series potentially being truncated due to recent sexual misconduct allegations against Gaiman, which he has refuted. Heinberg maintains that the format of the show was firmly established long before the controversy surfaced.

As a dedicated viewer, I’m genuinely relieved to hear that the show will be finished as initially promised, given the behind-the-scenes turmoil. It’s heartening indeed, considering the exceptional reception the first season received due to its faithful adaptation of the original work’s essence.
