The conflict between renowned rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar has escalated once more, following Drake’s decision to drop his lawsuit against Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) over Kendrick Lamar’s highly contentious single, Not Like Us. Their feud can be traced back to March 2024, when the Pulitzer Prize winner wrote a pointed verse in his collaboration with Future and Metro Boomin on Like That. Since then, both artists have released several diss tracks targeting each other, with Kendrick Lamar generally being perceived as having the upper hand. This long-standing dispute even led Drake to sue UMG and Spotify, a lawsuit he has since abandoned.
Below, you’ll find information about Drake (the God’s Plan singer) choosing to withdraw from the specified lawsuit.
Here is the complete rundown on why Drake decided to step back from this legal dispute.
Why did Drake drop UMG, Spotify case?
Currently, we’re still in the dark about the specific motive behind Drake’s team deciding to withdraw their lawsuit against UMG and Spotify. So far, the musician himself hasn’t issued any official statement regarding this matter.
In simpler terms, Drake’s lawyers claimed back in November 2024 that two companies (UMG, Universal Music Group, and possibly Spotify and iHeartRadio) worked together to unfairly lower the streaming licensing costs for Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us,” while at the same time making the song more popular through unnatural means. This was alleged to include using automated programs (bots) to increase the number of streams, and spreading a controversial song that called Drake a “certified pedophile.” The legal team also accused UMG of slander for helping to spread this defamatory claim.
In response, Spotify submitted an opposition brief against the Canadian artist’s request. A representative from the company also provided a clarification, explaining that Spotify does not financially benefit when users stream “Not Like Us” instead of any songs by Drake. (via Rolling Stone)
Following an initial move to take legal action, Drake’s company, Frozen Moments, has decided to hold off on any further steps in their ongoing disputes with Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify.
