Drake now sues his label Universal Music over Kendrick Lamar’s song

Drake is taking legal action against Universal Music Group (UMG), claiming that the company slandered him and was careless when they helped promote Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us,” which contains critical lyrics about Drake.

The song is said to spread unfounded and harmful accusations against Drake, branding him as a pedophile and advocating for “vigilante actions.” According to the lawsuit, these accusations have put Drake and his family in danger. This has led to an increase in security measures and significant disturbances to his personal life. Even his son’s education had to be disrupted due to these events.

In a federal court, a legal claim was submitted against UMG, asserting they often put financial gain above artist’s safety. Drake claims the company deliberately promoted a contentious track to create a stir and increase viral interaction, even though they knew the content was untrue. The lawsuit characterizes these actions as “greedy corporate behavior disregarding the safety and welfare of its artists.” Additionally, it alleges that UMG employed deceptive tactics such as using streaming bots and pay-for-play schemes to enhance the song’s exposure.

According to Drake, the aftermath of ‘Not Like Us’ resulted in numerous burglaries at his house and violent attacks on his possessions. He additionally alleges that Universal Music Group (UMG) aimed to boost Lamar while diminishing Drake’s value during contract renewal discussions, possibly due to favoritism towards Lamar.

UMG firmly rejects all claims made in the lawsuit, labeling it as groundless. They maintain that they have no intention of damaging an artist they’ve had a lengthy collaboration with – specifically, not Drake. In a released statement, the record label stated, “The idea that we would intentionally tarnish any artist’s reputation, especially Drake’s, is irrational.” The corporation also highlighted their significant financial support for Drake’s career (through BBC).

In the case at hand, although Kendrick Lamar isn’t directly accused, Drake’s lawyers claim that Universal Music Group (UMG) is solely accountable for endorsing and propagating the offensive song.
