Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake has no Switch to Switch 2 upgrade

The Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is coming to various platforms in October, offering a modernized version of classic RPGs, including both Nintendo Switch and its anticipated successor, Switch 2. However, it’s important to note that if you upgrade your Nintendo Switch to the Switch 2 in the future, the original version of the game will not be upgraded. Therefore, players should decide on either the current Switch or the upcoming Switch 2 for their gaming experience in the near term.

According to Square Enix’s FAQ on the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake for both the original Switch and the rumored Switch 2, it currently isn’t possible to upgrade your Switch version to the Switch 2 version of the game.

Square Enix suggests purchasing a copy suitable for the system you intend to play it on, according to their FAQ.

In May 2025, Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake will release on the Switch 2, as well as other platforms. It’s been reported that the differences between the Switch and Switch 2 versions are mainly related to graphics and performance improvements. However, the storyline, content, and gameplay mechanics are expected to stay consistent across both versions. Importantly, if you decide to upgrade to the Switch 2 version, your save data from the original Switch version will not carry over.

It appears that once players begin a game on a particular Nintendo Switch variant, they’re currently sticking with it. Keep an eye on news about the Dragon Quest series for future updates.
