Downton Abbey 3 Cast: Matthew Goode on Why He’s Not in Sequel

Actor Matthew Goode, known for his role as Henry Talbot in Seasons 5 and 6 of Downton Abbey on ITV/PBS and the 2019 film version of the same name, has shared insights regarding his absence from Downton Abbey 3. It’s worth noting that he also did not appear in the cast of Downton Abbey: A New Era in 2022.

Matthew Goode explains why he’s not in Downton Abbey 3

In an interview with Radio Times magazine, Goode clarified that he did not feature in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale because he was occupied with the filming of Netflix’s Department Q, set to release on May 29, 2025, and had undergone knee surgery.

For the second occasion, I couldn’t make it as I was busy with The Offer on Paramount+. During the third instance, I was engaged in filming Department Q. However, I also injured my knee and needed surgery.

As a dedicated admirer, I acknowledged that such a surgery would require ample recovery time, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to undergo it anytime soon. Moreover, Talbot’s temporary departure might unexpectedly prove beneficial for the narrative’s progression. In all honesty, he was starting to lean towards being somewhat bland, so perhaps this turn of events could serve as a refreshing change.

Downton Abbey initially debuted on television screens on September 26, 2010, and ran for six consecutive seasons until its final episode aired on December 25, 2015. The first follow-up movie had its premiere at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on September 9, 2019, followed by its release in the UK on September 13, 2019, and in the United States on September 20, 2019.

“A New Era had its debut at the same venue as the original, on April 25th, 2022. It was released in the UK on the 29th of the same month, and in the US on May 20th. The final installment is scheduled for release on September 12, 2025.”

In each installment of the series, Henry Talbot, a character created by Goode, is depicted as the husband of Lady Mary Talbot (previously Crawley), who is played by Michelle Dockery.
