In the closing months of 2023, Outerloop Games introduced an uncommon viewpoint in a turn-based RPG they launched – Dosa Divas: One Last Meal. This game offered entertaining turn-based combats, exaggerated physical comedy, and a moving narrative centered around culture, family, and culinary arts. It was one of the top games of that year, generating excitement for Outerloop’s future endeavor. While not explicitly labeled as such, Dosa Divas: One Last Meal seems to follow a similar pattern to Thirsty Suitors, hinted at during this year’s Summer Game Fest when I previewed it.
At this year’s Day of the Devs: Summer Game Fest Edition, the game Dosa Divas was introduced. This game focuses on two sisters, Amani and Samara, accompanied by their colossal mech, Goddess. There is a third sister in the family, but she serves as the antagonist of this tale – a corporate overlord named Lina, who controls the masses with her monotonous and unappetizing line of pre-made food, aptly dubbed LinaMeals. The game’s objective is to traverse the world, liberate the townspeople from the clutches of the corporate machine, and discover delicious dishes along the way.
In this demo, Lina’s legion of combat-ready lawyers swarmed the open world. This setup introduced a revamped iteration of the Thirsty Suitors design. Combat unfolds in turns, and there’s a twist reminiscent of Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario, where timing your hits can make them more powerful or lessen the damage received. Each enemy has unique weaknesses, categorized as Spicy or Sweet. Striking an enemy with their specific vulnerability can cause them to fill up, skipping their turn in the fight sequence. This fresh take on the established formula from Outerloop’s previous game is particularly engaging when it comes to dealing more damage using the Goddess’ mechanical limbs.
Beyond combat, players will gather ingredients and converse with the assorted inhabitants of neighboring towns. Some might request a meal, initiating Dosa Divas’ primary activity: cooking. Unlike the choreographed dance numbers in Thirsty Suitors, here the sisters venture into an alternate dimension to prepare meals. In this realm, players will participate in various mini-games to create dishes with diverse flavors. Offering the correct dish to the appropriate character can fulfill quests and advance the narrative.
I’ll always cherish Thirsty Suitors due to its heartwarming narrative, predominantly revolving around family and tradition. Similar to this, Dosa Divas aims to emulate those aspects, even bringing back beloved Uncle Hinti from Shacknews Best NPC of 2023 for tutorial guidance. We eagerly anticipate more of that distinctive Outerloop essence when Dosa Divas launches on PC in 2026.
We’ve had a sneak peek at the game during Summer Game Fest: Play Days, but remember, the final version could still have changes.
