Don't expect to see Pauley Perrette return to NCIS (or star in any show now)

As a gamer who has lived through the golden era of NCIS and seen Abby Sciuto rise to fame as one of the most beloved characters on television, it’s heart-wrenching to hear that Pauley Perrette is retiring from acting altogether. The quirky lab tech with her infectious energy brought a unique charm to the show, making each episode more enjoyable than the last.

Supporters of the TV show NCIS have long anticipated the character Abby’s comeback. Yet, considering Pauley Perrette’s statements, it seems unlikely that her return will ever materialize.

Among the characters from NCIS, it’s hard to find one as adored as Abby Sciuto. The goth lab technician charmed viewers from the start when the series debuted in 2004, and she stayed a central figure for an impressive fifteen seasons. With her witty humor, lively fashion choices, and bubbly personality, Abby captivated fans and significantly contributed to the show’s success.

Previously known for small parts on television, Pauley Perrette gained significant recognition through her breakout role. This pivotal part in the series catapulted her to greater fame, despite her decision to focus solely on portraying Abby and not pursue film roles.

In Season 15, Sciuto departed the series with Abby being written off. She was grieving the loss of her colleague Clayton Reeves and started a foundation in his memory. Fans anticipated her comeback, but Perrette later revealed she had experienced verbal and even physical harassment on set, including from lead actor Mark Harmon. Although an investigation found no misconduct, Perrette made it clear she had no intention of rejoining the show.

After appearing on CBS in the show “Broke,” which unfortunately didn’t continue for another season, Perry has since been engaged in charitable activities and recovering from a stroke in 2021. Could there be a comeback for her character Abby in the future?

Why Pauley Perrette is quitting acting

Well, here’s the deal: I’ve got some news that might surprise you – Paulette Perrette, who played Abby on our favorite show, isn’t coming back anymore. What’s more, she’s made it clear that she’s hanging up her acting boots for good. In an interview with Hello magazine, she opened up about her decision and the reasons behind it.

I’m not ungrateful for the benefits that [acting] gave to me. But I’m a different person now and… I want to be me all the time. [it] takes a good amount of courage for me to say that to myself but it’s authentically how I feel. At this point in my life I have this deep need to find authenticity in everything.[B]eing an actor, especially at certain points in my life, was a great escape; it’s like a drug because I didn’t have to be me, I could be somebody else. Going back to being an actor would be taking away from this life of true authenticity that I’m living 100% of the time.

Earlier, Perrette had suggested retiring in 2020, but due to the global suspension of film and television production caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it was unclear if her statement was genuine or not. A stroke further complicated matters, and she has frequently expressed her disinterest in continuing with NCIS on Twitter. This announcement serves to confirm that Perrette is stepping away from Hollywood entirely.

I feel a pang of regret, but it’s clear that Pauley Perrette has faced a multitude of challenges in her life, from her departure from NCIS to her health issues, like the stroke. At 53, she’s been immersed in documentary production and charitable endeavors. She appears to be thriving now, and while it would be exciting to see her return to acting, it’s hard not to respect her decision to move on from Abby and focus on her current life.

NCIS Seasons 1-21 streaming on Paramount+. Season 22 premieres on Monday, Oct. 14 on CBS.
