Fans are shocked and betrayed as Australian YouTube personality Karl Jobst lost his defamation case against Billy Mitchell, a previous record holder in Donkey Kong and Pac-Man speedrunning. After the court ruled that a defaming video was posted based on “irresponsible” and false accusations, Jobst was ordered to pay $350,000, including interests.
Who Are These People?
Billy Mitchell is well-known as a notorious speedrunner, who holds the world records in games such as Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. He’s famously depicted in the documentary titled “The King of Kong.
Over the years, I’ve seen numerous allegations against Billy Mitchell claiming he cheated in setting his records, mostly by utilizing Arcade Emulators like MAME. These accusations resulted in the removal of his records from both Guinness World Records and Twin Galaxies as more substantial evidence came to light. Despite being known for suing individuals over defamatory statements, these claims have left a significant question mark over his achievements.
Karl Jobst is a popular Australian YouTuber and speedrunner with approximately 1.1 million subscribers, frequently discussing topics related to speedrunning and cheating controversies. Towards the end of 2019, he published his initial video focusing on Billy Mitchell and his various scandals that have occurred over time.
What Everyone Thought The Lawsuit Is About
2021 saw me, Karl Jobst, sharing on my YouTube channel that I too found myself embroiled in a lawsuit by Billy Mitchell due to allegedly defamatory statements. As the legal proceedings unfolded, I kept my audience updated not only on this court case but also on all things related to Billy Mitchell, as well as continuing my regular coverage of the speedrunning community. Many fans showed their support for me during this time by donating funds to help with my legal defense. This was primarily due to the belief that the lawsuit stemmed from my claims about Billy cheating, a reason he had previously sued other content creators over. Given this assumption, it seemed almost certain that I would prevail in my case against Billy Mitchell, as there was strong evidence suggesting foul play in his high scores.
The Real Reason Behind The Lawsuit
Following the broadcast of the verdict, fans were taken aback to discover that Jobst had lost the case and questioned how such an outcome could have transpired. It was later revealed that the basis for the defamation lawsuit against Jobst wasn’t his accusations of cheating towards Mitchell, but rather that Mitchell sued Jobst over a claim involving fellow YouTuber “Apollo Legend.” Specifically, it was alleged that Apollo Legend took his own life after having to pay a substantial amount of money to Mitchell.
A YouTuber named Apollo Legend, who was known for producing content similar to Jobst’s, shared a video titled “The Greatest Deception in Gaming History” in September 2019. This video delved into claims that Mitchell had falsified his gaming scores. Subsequently, Mitchell filed a lawsuit against Apollo Legend due to accusations of defamation.
Was It Really Mitchell’s Fault?
In a 2021 video, Karl Jobst suggested that Mitchell played a role in his own demise due to stress caused by his settlement and alleged financial obligations paid by Apollo Legend. It’s accurate to say that Mitchell appeared pleased with an earlier false report about Apollo Legend’s death; however, he took legal action against Jobst over these accusations. The judge found that Jobst’s portrayal of the situation implied that Mitchell had been pursuing Apollo Legend relentlessly, which could be interpreted as contributing to his death.
Although Jobst’s genuine motive for the lawsuit is known, spectators argue that they were deceived by him since his descriptions of the lawsuit appeared to be centered around accusations of cheating rather than the true reason.
Outcome
As a devoted admirer, I must sadly report that Karl Jobst unfortunately didn’t prevail in court and is mandated to pay a significant sum of $350,000, including accrued interest. Contrary to earlier speculation, it was disclosed that Apollo Legend resolved his legal battle with Billy Mitchell without having to compensate him financially. In a since-removed video from Apollo Legend prior to his tragic demise, he confessed that his primary motivation was an unresolved feud with another YouTube personality, DarkViperAU.
Apollo Legend never once brought up Mitchell or the legal dispute, and was well-known for dealing with health problems. Judge Ken Barlow asserts that Jobst’s allegations have caused significant harm to Mitchell’s reputation, while Jobst himself claimed that Billy Mitchell already had a questionable track record due to his many instances of cheating and his notoriety for filing lawsuits without much provocation.
Additionally, Judge Barlow characterized Jobst’s actions as more of a “campaign” directed towards Mitchell. This perspective is supported by the audience’s continued interest in Jobst’s reporting on Mitchell-related topics.
Why Fans Feel Cheated
Despite some supporters maintaining faith in Mitchell’s innocence, it’s widely accepted that evidence showing Mitchell used MAME instead of real arcade hardware is convincing. However, others accuse Mitchell of excessive self-confidence and label him as a compulsive liar. This perception is why fans consider this case to be the definitive blow to a cheater’s reputation. Examining comments on Jobst’s videos or his GoFundMe page for legal fees, it’s evident that this was Jobst’s impression he conveyed to his followers.
A comment by a fan who donated $156 states:
I love to see true justice prevail, and watch tyrants, narcissists, and evil people get their comeuppances! Here’s some cash, Karl, and thanks for the videos! I was a fan before the Billy Mitchell videos, and it took me a long time to save some money to help out with the legal fees! Keep up the good fight!
In total, the GoFundMe raised $200,891AUD.
Karl Jobst’s Response
The live broadcast of the court verdict has been removed, and subsequently, Jobst posted a comment regarding this matter in the discussion section of his YouTube channel.
I removed my last video. Obviously people are upset so it is better I address the concerns of the public first and make a video explaining everything. I would just ask you wait for my video before making a full judgement.
Despite numerous fans expressing anger and suspicion due to Jobst’s concealed information regarding the real nature of the lawsuit, some supporters continue to stand by him, believing his intentions were honorable. These fans are eager for Jobst’s next video to provide clarity on his genuine reasons for not disclosing the true objective behind this court case earlier.
Which view do you lean towards when considering the circumstances? Is it more likely that Karl Jobst had noble motivations, or is it possible that Billy Mitchell was unfairly dealt with?
