Dogma 2 Gets Update, Matt Damon & Ben Affleck Could Return

Kevin Smith shared an exciting update for Dogma 2, the long-awaited sequel to 1999’s Dogma.

In a twist of fantasy humor, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck played Loki and Bartleby, two angels who had fallen from grace, setting off on an adventure to New Jersey. Their objective? To find a loophole in the Catholic Church that could potentially grant them re-entry into heaven. This year, in honor of its 25th anniversary rerelease, Smith has been traveling across the country, sharing the movie Dogma in cinemas.

Smith shared with ComingSoon during an exclusive interview that he’s delighted to have spent the past two months watching the film, as it has remarkably maintained its charm over time.

Last year, I (as a fan) proudly took Dogma to the 2025 Cannes Film Festival – the very same place where it was first screened back in 1999. While immersed in the magical atmosphere of Cannes, an inspiring realization struck me: a sequel could be in the works!

What are Kevin Smith’s plans for Dogma 2?

Speaking with Deadline, Smith disclosed that he had no intention of revisiting the French film festival as he felt that the “Cannes-worthy part” was already complete. The positive response to Dogma at the 2025 festival has inspired Smith to develop Dogma 2 and potentially present it at Cannes again in a few years, provided there’s one stipulation.

This year marked the 78th edition, and Smith expressed, “I think to myself, ‘Maybe I’ll return for the 80th or at least the 81st, with a sequel to Dogma. It could be a film worthy of Cannes,'” he said. During his introduction, he shared this thought, and the audience applauded in approval. Festival director Thierry Frémaux was on stage with him, and he added, “As long as it’s good,” to which Smith responded, “Fair enough, if it’s good, yes.

Smith added that he finally “cracked the story” for the sequel after pondering it for six months.

A key aspect that set Dogma apart was its impressive ensemble cast, featuring big names like Damon, Affleck, Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, and George Carlin. However, it’s unclear whether these actors will reprise their roles for Dogma 2. While Smith would be delighted to have them back, he can certainly create a sequel without their presence.

Smith stated, “I’ll leave a seat at the table for those characters from the first film who are still alive, regrettably Alan and George won’t be present. However, I’ll reserve a spot for all of them. If they reappear, they’ll have a part to play, but if not, it’s no problem. The narrative I’m creating can incorporate everyone from Dogma, but it can also stand alone, which makes me eager to proceed.

The Dogma rerelease returns to theaters in the United States on June 5.
