As a lifelong fan of Kevin Smith’s work, especially his iconic “View Askewniverse”, I can hardly contain my excitement over the announcement of “Dogma 2”! The prospect of seeing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reprise their roles as Bartleby and Loki has me eagerly awaiting this sequel.
Director Kevin Smith has officially announced that a follow-up to his highly praised 1999 movie, “Dogma,” is in development. During his talk at Vulture Festival, he provided some insights on this upcoming project. It appears that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon may reprise their roles for “Dogma 2.” These disclosures offer a glimpse into the sequel’s direction as it begins its initial stages.
Kevin Smith reveals Dogma 2 is happening with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon
According to recent updates, Kevin Smith has confirmed the upcoming production of Dogma 2, and it’s anticipated that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will return to portray the characters of Bartleby and Loki, who were fallen angels in the original film.
At the Vulture Festival on November 17, 2024, Smith expressed his eagerness for the follow-up to Dogma. “Some may say, ‘Leave it alone. You’ll only mess it up,'” Smith mentioned. “But let me assure you, I intend to do just that – mess it up, in a good way! I’m absolutely thrilled about it and have found a way to be part of it.” (paraphrased from Deadline)
The director strongly underscored the significance of Affleck and Damon being involved, saying, “You can definitely look forward to them appearing – not just a brief appearance, but more than that. The only way we can make a Dogma sequel is if they’re on board, so rest assured they will be there.” In reference to their lengthy partnership, Smith reminisced, “For the past 25 years, I’ve been able to remind both of them of our shared history, which is why they continue to appear in our films together.
1999 saw the debut of Dogma as the fourth film in Kevin Smith’s shared universe, the View Askewniverse. This movie tells the story of two angels attempting to manipulate a loophole in order to return to Heaven. The cast includes Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, and Alanis Morissette. Smith himself appears as Silent Bob, while Jason Mewes plays Jay.
Smith has shared that Dogma will be back in cinemas and available for 4K home viewing, as a new company has obtained the distribution rights from Miramax. He hinted that this fresh agreement might pave the way for “potential sequels or TV adaptations,” which was something we couldn’t pursue previously.
As a passionate gamer, I’m proud to say that this moment marks a significant leap forward in Dogma’s journey. The project encountered numerous setbacks due to legal complications involving Harvey Weinstein, which made it impossible for me to associate with him in any capacity. Put simply, I refused to be part of such a situation. (Vulture was the source of this revelation.)
