As a long-time fan of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series and a devoted viewer of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and now “House of the Dragon,” I have grown accustomed to the complexities and intricacies of Westeros’ lore. Seasmoke’s new rider, Addam of Hull, being chosen in House of the Dragon is an intriguing development that has me pondering the implications for both the storyline and the original lore.
I’m thrilled to share that Seasmoke, the legendary dragon from “House of the Dragon,” has selected a new rider. The fortunate soul who gets to soar in the skies with this magnificent beast is Addam from Hull. What a perfect match!
Addam is the offspring born outside of marriage to Corly Velaryon. As a result, he carries Velaryon lineage in his veins. Furthermore, he shares the role of half-sibling with Ser Laenor Velaryon, who previously rode Seasmoke.
Has House of the Dragon changed the lore of dragons?
In the first season, I was surprised when Laenor didn’t die as written in the books. Instead, he faked his own demise. This decision sparked controversy among fans, as they were expecting Laenor to be murdered, just like in the source material. However, since his body was cremated and buried beyond recognition in the book, it technically left room for this TV series twist. Yet, it did create a bit of confusion regarding the dragons’ lore.
In the traditional tale, a dragon forms a deep connection with just one rider. Seasmoke being bound to Ser Laenor, it seemed illogical for this attachment to dissolve before death. However, in “House of the Dragon” Season 1, Laenor feigned his demise. It’s plausible that Seasmoke, aware of his rider’s survival, would feel neglected and sad, as if abandoned.
Seasmoke’s decision to pick Addam instead of Laenor might indicate a shift in the series’ original lore. It could also signify that the show has officially confirmed Laenor’s death, addressing a potential inconsistency from the first season.
Is Laenor now dead in House of the Dragon?
I’ve come across this theory before: Rhaenys and Corlys had a conversation about how Laenor was supposedly deceased. It’s possible that they weren’t part of the plan to fake his death, so they might not have known the truth behind it. But if they were in on the scheme, their discussion could have been a confirmation that Laenor was indeed no longer among the living.
In simpler terms, this implies that the tales about dragons remain unaltered. Seasmoke recognizes that his previous master has passed away, allowing him to forge a new connection with another person.
Could it be that the show has altered the original story? In that case, Addam’s selection could be justified. Given that Addam is half-brother to Ser Leanor, perhaps their familial tie is strong enough for Seasmoke to form a connection with another rider before the current one returns.
I think Seasmoke choosing Addam is a sign that Laenor is now officially dead.
