Following his role as a villain in Jessica Jones, David Tennant expressed interest in portraying a superhero character should he join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In Netflix’s series Jessica Jones, Tennant portrayed the character Kevin Thompson/Kilgrave, who possessed the power to manipulate people’s minds. Due to his influence, Jessica Jones was forced to commit a murder, prompting her to leave her superhero vocation behind and instead take up work as a private investigator.
At the MCM Comic Con in the heart of London, a fellow gamer posed a question that made me ponder: if I had to choose between donning the cape of a superhero or wielding the power of a supervillain, which would I pick? With a gleam in my eye, I shared that I struck gold with Kilgrave’s role and it turned out to be just the right fit for me.
Why did David Tennant want to play another MCU role?
As a hypothetical gamer, if Tennant had flipped allegiances and played the hero, he’d share that his dream was always to be part of Marvel’s First Family.
“In terms of superheroes, I did slightly have my eye on Reed Richards,” Tennant said.
Regrettably, Marvel decided to go a different route and selected Pedro Pascal for the role of Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Tennant shared that he’d be quite pleased if Pedro Pascal took on the role, and said so honestly. Yet, deep down, he had hoped to play Reed Richards himself.
He also expressed his interest, saying, “I really look forward to being capable of doing everything,” and continued, “Regrettably, it might take some time before we have another chance for that, I’m afraid.
Pascal, along with the other members of the Fantastic Four, will play crucial roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming stories. Tennant’s prediction appears to be accurate as it might take a considerable amount of time before another actor portrays Reed Richards.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, it has been demonstrated that multiple actors can portray the same character. For instance, John Krasinski embodied Reed Richards in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Similarly, three Spider-Men – Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire – each played their unique take on Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” However, while it’s theoretically possible that Tennant could portray a different rendition of Reed Richards, it seems rather improbable.
For now, Tennant is happy for Pascal to get a crack at the character.
Tennant described him as truly ‘Mister Fantastic,’ emphasizing his all-around excellence,” the statement reads. “He’s a big fan of Pedro Pascal and feels incredibly fortunate that such a talented individual is part of our world.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps opens in theaters on July 25, 2025.
