Doctor Who Shocks Fans by Reviving Iconic Villain with a Stunning Twist!

Ever since its reboot in 2023, I’ve found that Doctor Who has been delving deeper into the roots of the original series. Instead of relying on the usual suspects like the Daleks and Cybermen, the show has been introducing more obscure adversaries with fresh spins. The latest example is Omega, a former Time Lord once considered one of the most powerful, who has recently undergone a retcon.

Omega first appeared in the “The Three Doctors” series, celebrating Doctor Who’s 10th anniversary. A skilled cosmic engineer, it was Omega who developed the technology to make time travel a reality. While the details are debated, it’s clear that during this process, Omega became trapped within an antimatter universe upon finishing his life’s work.

In recognition of Omega’s seemingly selfless act, the Time Lords rose to prominence as a significant force across the galaxy. Yet, this newfound power offered little solace to Omega, who, despite gaining divine abilities, found himself unable to engage with the physical universe. The loneliness pushed him towards vengeance against his own kind. This led to confrontations with The Doctor on multiple occasions within the classic TV series. As the final scenes revealed, Omega had not succeeded in regenerating a material form even under the care of the Fifth Doctor.

How did Doctor Who bring back Omega?

In episode ‘Wish World’ from Doctor Who’s second season, The Rani, a rogue scientist and Time Lady with no sense of morality, made her comeback. Much like The Doctor, she had split into two forms, portrayed by Anita Dobson and Archie Panjabi. These two incarnations of The Rani collaborated on a scheme to redesign Earth into an ideal world according to the beliefs of conspiracy theorist Conrad Clark. This transformation was orchestrated with the help of a recently born deity, Desiderium, who embodies the power of wishes.

The Rani’s strategy stemmed from the notion that what one believes shapes the nature of reality, while doubt weakens it. To exploit this concept, they tapped into the doubts of anyone skeptical about Conrad Clark’s utopian vision, particularly The Doctor. This collective uncertainty was intended to fracture reality and pave the way towards the Underverse and “The One Who Is Lost.” The Rani went on to pinpoint this enigmatic figure as Omega.

As a gamer immersed in alternate realities, I’ve stumbled upon intriguing echoes between the enigmatic Underverse and the 2023 Doctor Who special ‘The Giggle.’ In this narrative, a discordant deity, famously known as The Toymaker, dwells within the Under-Universe. This cosmic craftsman spoke of an all-powerful entity he refused to engage in games with, whom he referred to as “The One Who Waits.” Interestingly, this moniker could be perfectly suited for Omega, though this link remains unverified. However, it appears that a recent rewrite (retcon) has Omega confined within the Underverse instead of the antimatter universe.
