Doctor Who Series 15 Teaser Introduces Varada Sethu’s Belinda Chandra

Having witnessed her stellar performance as Mundy Flynn, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for what Belinda Chandra will bring to the table.

In the sneak peek for Season 15 of Doctor Who, we meet Varada Sethu for the first time as she joins the Doctor’s new traveling partner, Belinda Chandra. Previously, Sethu played Mundy Flynn in Season 14. Interestingly, this season is also referred to as Season 2 in promotional materials due to production changes and the fact that Disney+ now holds international broadcasting rights for the show.

In the latest sneak peek for Doctor Who’s 15th series or Season 2, we see Belinda Chandra, portrayed by actress Varada Sethu, who is the latest travel partner of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. The teaser showcases Belinda conversing with the Doctor and requesting his assistance in returning home.

After the end of Doctor Who’s 2024 Christmas Special called “Joy to the World,” the trailer for a teaser was shown.

It wasn’t until January 2024 that the news broke about Sethu taking on the role of Belinda, originally announced as a replacement for Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday as the Doctor’s new companion. However, it turned out that these two characters would share the screen together in Series 15. In fact, both Sethu and Gibson can be seen alongside Gatwa in the series teaser trailer. The identity of Sethu’s character was finally unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024.

In the thirteenth episode of Series 14, titled “Boom”, the character previously portrayed by Sethu – Mundy Flynn – makes an appearance. This time, in the year 5087, Mundy is revealed as an Anglican marine. The Fifteenth Doctor and their companion, Ruby, come across her. It’s worth noting that showrunner Russell T. Davies mentioned to SFX magazine that Sethu will not be reprising the role of Mundy. Instead, he shared insights on how Sethu was cast as a companion in the series.

In simpler terms, Davies stated that having a fantastic actor like Freema Agyeman, who played both Adeola Oshodi in Army Of Ghosts and Martha Jones, means needing a new companion character. He was particularly impressed during the 15th edit of Boom, expressing his admiration for her acting skills repeatedly.
