Disney’s live-action Tangled remake is being put on pause.
In December 2024, it became known that Disney was planning a live-action adaptation of the 2010 film Tangled, which was originally animated. The director for this project was chosen as Michael Gracey, who previously worked on The Greatest Showman and Better Man. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was assigned to write the script for the movie.
What’s happening with Disney’s live-action Tangled remake?
Originally undergoing active production, a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter indicates that the movie’s progress has been halted temporarily.
According to the article, it’s unclear if “Tangled” will continue on its current path or if there will be a fresh creative approach taken instead.
At present, there’s no clear explanation for Disney halting the production of the live-action Tangled remake. It’s important to mention that the latest Disney live-action adaptation, Snow White, didn’t perform exceptionally well at the box office, earning approximately $145.7 million worldwide. However, it’s worth noting that some sources suggest a hefty budget of $270 million for this film.
The success of Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, opening nationwide on May 23, 2025, could significantly influence the direction of their future live-action remakes. On the other hand, Universal Pictures is also joining the trend, releasing How to Train Your Dragon this June, and planning a follow-up in 2027.
In the initial release of the enchanting animated film Tangled, it was Nathan Greno and Byron Howard who skillfully took on the role of directors. The talented voice actors behind the characters are Mandy Moore, who played Rapunzel, Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider, and Donna Murphy lending her voice to Mother Gothel.
In the synopsis for this movie, it’s described that “when the kingdom’s most dangerous outlaw is captured by Rapunzel – a young woman with 70 feet of radiant golden hair who’s been confined in a tower for years – they embark on an exhilarating journey to freedom,” which captures the essence and readability of the original.
