Disney & Universal file copyright lawsuit against Midjourney AI company

Disney and Universal have taken legal action against AI company Midjourney, claiming they’ve copied huge amounts of intellectual property without permission. The lawsuit focuses on Midjourney’s artificial intelligence technology that enables users to generate videos and images using manipulated data and imagery from existing content. According to Disney and Universal, this means Midjourney has broken the copyright law by illegally using their movies, artwork, and various media to power their tools.

This week, Disney and Universal have officially filed a 143-page lawsuit against Midjourney, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The lawsuit presents numerous instances where Midjourney is alleged to have used Disney or Universal content, modified it, and subsequently produced “synthetic images generated by A.I.” Some of the examples provided by Disney showcase flagrant imitations from Midjourney, with minor color adjustments or feature modifications being the only differences.

Disney and Universal allege that Midjourney has been using their content without permission, and if not halted by legal action, they fear further copyright violations will occur.

Disney has pointed out that there are no licensing arrangements for this content, yet Midjourney showcases some of it on their Explore pages, such as an AI-generated image of Woody from Toy Story. Essentially, Disney and Universal have presented a detailed case regarding the issue. Whether the courts share this view remains to be seen.
