As a seasoned Disney enthusiast who’s been following their live-action remakes since the magical days of Beauty and the Beast, I find myself both astounded and amused by the ever-expanding budget of Snow White. With a whopping $240 million production cost before marketing, this fairy tale adaptation is undeniably setting new standards for Disney’s financial extravagance.
The highly anticipated live-action version of Snow White is getting closer to its premiere date, and it’s now revealing its substantial production budget. This film has been under development since 2022, and its creation process has been quite challenging, leading to numerous postponements and reshoots. Consequently, Disney has had to spend increasingly large amounts of money on the project, thereby escalating its overall production cost.
Disney’s Snow White had a $240 million budget before marketing
The upcoming movie “Snow White,” featuring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot in key roles, is said to be produced with an estimated budget of $240 million. This figure does not include marketing and distribution expenses, which means that Snow White is likely to be one of the priciest Disney adaptations ever greenlit, without counting additional costs.
1) It was Variety that originally used this specific statistic about the film. Filming for Snow White started in 2022, in both Vancouver and Los Angeles, but additional filming took place in 2024.
Consequently, its escalating budget places Snow White among the top three costliest live-action adaptations in their collection, sharing this spot with last summer’s The Little Mermaid, which is said to have a budget of approximately $240 million.
In 2017’s Beauty and the Beast and 2019’s The Lion King, produced by Disney, outshone the upcoming Snow White in terms of investment and box office success. Disney initially spent an impressive $255 million and $260 million on these two projects respectively, with additional costs such as prints and advertising bringing The Lion King’s final budget up to a whopping $621 million (as reported by ComicBook.com). After earning a staggering $1.65 billion at the global box office, Disney walked away with a net profit of $580 million from these productions.
To make a profit, modern films with grand productions must earn at least twice their original costs. Given this requirement, Snow White’s production will face an immense challenge by needing to generate approximately $600 million in revenue.
To be honest, it feels like a stretch right now, considering The Little Mermaid only managed to earn $569 million last year with a similar budget. Additionally, it’s worth noting that no Disney live-action remake has surpassed the $600 million mark at the box office since 2019’s Aladdin and The Lion King.
Snow White will be coming out on the big screens on March 21, 2025.
