As a long-time gamer and Disney enthusiast who has grown accustomed to sharing my Disney+ subscription with friends and family across the globe, I must admit, the recent password-sharing crackdown has left me a tad disheartened.
The enforcement of stricter rules against sharing Disney+ accounts has commenced, as Disney now notifies subscribers about the option to upgrade and permit additional, non-family users to access their account for a fee.
The action follows numerous reports over several months suggesting that Disney was planning to enforce stricter measures against password sharing, similar to other streaming services. Now, Disney has rolled out its paid-sharing features across countries like the US, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, with an initial launch in select markets over the summer.

Disney explained to its subscribers through Variety that a Disney+ subscription is intended for use on devices within your household, which refers to all devices linked to the primary home where you live and share with other residents.

Users who wish to grant access to friends or relatives living elsewhere can indeed do so. However, they’ll need to register separately and cover their own subscription costs, or else they can be added as Additional Members on your account for a monthly fee to keep enjoying Disney+.
As a devoted Disney+ fan, here’s the scoop on the Extra Member profile: If you’re based in the U.S., it’ll set you back an extra $6.99 for the Basic plan and $9.99 for the Premium one. Keep in mind that only one Premium Extra slot is available per account, so unfortunately, you can’t add as many friends or family members as you might like. Also, heads up, the Extra Member option doesn’t play nicely with Disney Bundle options that include services like Hulu or ESPN+.
Just as Netflix and similar streaming services enable access even when users are traveling, Disney+ account holders can still enjoy their content if they’re away from home. To do this, they simply need to indicate that they are currently away or update their residential information on their account if they’ve moved, which will then adjust the location settings for seamless streaming.
