Disney has unexpectedly postponed the release of their live-action version of Tangled, and given the recent disappointment of Snow White (a movie that underperformed so significantly it might become a case study in economics), it’s no surprise that Disney is reconsidering their approach to live-action remakes. However, it seems they might just be putting on an act.
It was anticipated that “Tangled” would be the next major success, given Michael Gracey (director of “The Greatest Showman”) at the helm and a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (from “Thor: Love and Thunder”). Production was scheduled for this summer. However, events surrounding “Snow White” took place. This film’s disappointing global earnings of $145 million (against an estimated budget and marketing costs that reached $350 million) caused a stir within Disney’s executive offices.
There were several issues with the Snow White film, such as casting disputes, inappropriate marketing strategies, and a lack of enthusiasm from audiences about a revamped adaptation of a well-loved tale. The actress playing the lead role, Rachel Zegler, further fueled controversy during media interviews. The negative response was so strong that it appears Disney is now cautious when considering reworking another treasured story, or they may be planning extensive damage control.
Regarding the potential live-action remake of the 2010 film “Tangled”, it’s uncertain if Disney will either quietly abandon the project or try to reimagine it creatively. Given their past record, it might not be wise to anticipate a loyal adaptation. The recent live-action remakes have been less about preserving the spirit of their animated counterparts and more about fulfilling corporate requirements. Since “Tangled” was already a deviation from the original story, there may be fewer elements to modify.
Currently, Disney is working on more live-action remakes, such as “Lilo & Stitch” set for release in May 2025 and “Moana” scheduled for July 2026. Time will tell if these movies will be successful. However, the reception to Disney’s strategy of revisiting the past may have grown stale, a lesson we learned from “Snow White.” Yet, I must say, the trailer for “Lilo & Stitch” had me chuckling with delight.
It seems Disney might need to reconsider its approach to remaking classic tales, as audiences appear to prefer stories that honor the original versions. However, given their current trend, anticipating such self-reflection could be as pointless as expecting Rapunzel to descend from her tower anytime soon.
