As a gamer with a soft spot for documentaries and a deep appreciation for trailblazing women, I am absolutely thrilled about Disney’s upcoming biopic on Jane Goodall! Growing up, I’ve always been fascinated by her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees and her tireless advocacy for conservation.
Disney has excelled at producing inspiring biographical films like Saving Mr. Banks, Secretariat, and this year’s Young Woman and the Sea. Yet, they’re not done telling heartwarming tales. Renowned conservationist Jane Goodall will soon be featured in a Disney biopic, with The Luminaries author Eleanor Catton penning the script.
For six decades, I’ve delved into the complex social lives and familial bonds of our closest relatives, chimpanzees, within their natural habitats. Breaking barriers in the 1960s as a female zoologist, I demonstrated that many human behaviors could trace their roots back to our common ancestors with these remarkable creatures. Excitingly, Disney Nature has chosen my story for a biopic, confirming this dream project to Deadline!
In her own words, “A movie is being produced featuring me, and they’ve chosen an actress to play my role,” Dr. Goodall mentioned. “I’ve read the initial screenplay and provided numerous suggestions.
1) Apart from endorsing the upcoming Disney project, Jane Goodall will take on a producer role as well. Additionally, Eleanor Catton – a renowned author for her historical fiction novel “The Luminaries” and the award-winning miniseries adaptation – has been recruited as screenwriter. She’s also penned the screenplay for the 2020 film adaptation of Emma, starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
Disney is teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way Productions, to co-produce the biopic. In addition, Jane Goodall and Appian Way are joining forces to create an upcoming live-action film titled “Howl,” which presents events from a dog and wolf’s viewpoint. The movie is currently in its early stages of production.
