The British series Extraordinary and Shardlake have sadly been axed from Disney+, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the streaming platform who released an official statement regarding their cancellation.
What did Disney+ Say About Canceling Extraordinary & Shardlake?
The Disney+ Original series “Extraordinary” will not be coming back for a third season on the platform. A representative from the streaming service shared this news. They expressed pride in the side-splitting, award-winning show that came to life under the skilled hands of the British and Irish cast and crew, the production team at Sid Gentle Films, and the creative genius of series creator Emma Moran.
As reported by Variety, the representative stated: “The Disney+ Original series ‘Shardlake’ will not be renewed for a second season on the platform. We’d like to express gratitude towards Stephen Butchard for adapting C.J. Sansom’s beloved novel for the screen, the exceptional lead actor Arthur Hughes and the entire cast and crew, as well as our production partners The Forge and Runaway Fridge. We look forward to collaborating with everyone involved in these shows again in the future.
Season 1 of the extraordinary series primarily focused on the character of Jen, who at the tender age of mid-twenties, remains powerless in a universe where most people possess unique abilities. This young woman, characterized by her acute self-awareness, seems to be drifting aimlessly, yearning for her own superpower. However, with the unfortunate news that Extraordinary Season 3 will not materialize, the mystery of Jen’s powers and their eventual manifestation remains unresolved, leaving viewers hanging at the end of Season 2.
In the comedy series, Máiréad Tyers portrays the character Jen, while Bilal Hasna and Luke Rollason are also part of the cast. Concurrently, Siobhán McSweeney and Robbie Gee depict Jen’s mother and stepfather respectively.
Created by Emma Moran, Extraordinary is overseen by executive producers Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris at Sid Gentle Films (known for Killing Eve). Charles Dawson, Johanna Devereaux, and Emma Moran also serve as executive producers. Charlie Palmer acts as Series Producer, with Abíólá Rufai-Awójídé serving as Producer.
The Shardlake series consists of four mystery novels set during the Tudor period. These stories revolve around Matthew Shardlake, a barrister, who is tasked by Thomas Cromwell to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of a commissioner in a secluded town. In this production, Arthur Hughes portrayed the main character, while Sean Bean and Anthony Boyle also starred.

Despite the cancellations of some shows, Disney+ is pushing ahead with other British productions. The series “Rivals,” starring David Tennant, has been successful. This drama, with its focus on scandals, is also available on Hulu in the U.S. and will return for a second season. Additionally, “A Thousand Blows,” created by Stephen Knight, will debut on February 21st.
