As a seasoned observer of the dynamic world of Indian cinema, I must say that Prabhas’ decision to decline Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s offer for Padmaavat was a strategic move, given his commitment to Baahubali 2 at the time. However, upon reflection, I believe it was a missed opportunity.
Despite being adored nationwide, Prabhas wasn’t always a household name like today. Interestingly, you might not know that the star of Baahubali was initially given a significant part in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2018 hit movie Padmaavat. We’ll share why he eventually declined this chance to be part of the film.
The character at hand was none other than Maharawal Ratan Singh, a valiant Rajput king who ruled approximately around 1302-1303 AD. This significant figure played a pivotal role in the historical drama, alongside Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.
As a dedicated follower of the cinema world, I recall when Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the visionary filmmaker behind Padmaavat, was on the verge of finalizing his star-studded cast. One pivotal role remained unfilled—Maharawal Ratan Singh. Intriguingly, Bhansali had already set his sights on Prabhas, deeply moved by his mesmerizing performance in SS Rajamouli’s epic Baahubali. He felt that Prabhas’ enigmatic presence and aura would perfectly embody the character. Moreover, Prabhas’ widespread appeal across India significantly influenced Bhansali’s decision to cast him for this historic role.
Nevertheless, though the offer was tempting, Prabhas declined the role instead. Later, it was given to Shahid Kapoor, who skillfully played Maharawal Ratan Singh, a performance that significantly boosted the movie’s triumph.
It seems that Prabhas declined a major Bollywood production because at that point, he was heavily invested in the filming of Baahubali 2. Furthermore, upon reading the script and understanding the extent of his character, Maharawal Ratan Singh, he felt unimpressed.
Prabhas found this role less significant and less glamorous than some of the period roles he’s taken on before, especially in contrast to his famous character from Baahubali.
It’s also believed that Prabhas may have been hesitant to take on a role that might not measure up to the reputation he had established over time, particularly following the colossal success of Baahubali. Rumors suggest he was seeking a leading role commensurate with Deepika Padukone’s character, and he felt that Maharawal Ratan Singh’s role lacked the necessary level of significance.
In terms of his career, Prabhas remains occupied with an array of captivating projects such as The Raja Saab, Soldier (Fauji), Spirit, and the sequel to Salaar on his plate.
