Did the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale confirm Sunfyre’s fate?

Did the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale confirm Sunfyre's fate?

As a devoted fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Westeros, I must say that the fate of Sunfyre in “House of the Dragon” has left me with a heavy heart. The episode was a stark reminder of the brutal realities of power struggles and the cost they exact on our beloved characters and their dragons.

In House of the Dragon, Rook’s Rest turned out to be a catastrophe for the Black family, but it also proved detrimental for the Greens. King Aegon’s experiences at Rook’s Rest left an indelible mark on him, and we didn’t receive much new information about Sunfyre. The Season 2 finale seems to have shed light on the fate of Sunfyre.

As a gamer, I’ve only received word from Rhaenyra so far, and her message left me worried – Sunfyre, one of our beloved dragons, is allegedly deceased. It’s hard to say for certain, but it seems like she was referring to Sunfyre and not Meleys. Strangely enough, the Greens haven’t uttered a word about Sunfyre since the calamity at Rook’s Rest.

Aegon confirms Sunfyre is dead in House of the Dragon

In that episode, I truly empathized with poor Sunfyre. He wasn’t equipped for battle, and his rider, unfortunately, wasn’t much better prepared. Aegon, under the influence, seemed to believe he was invincible. However, his reckless actions resulted in him getting severely burned and injured, and poor Sunfyre plummeted from the sky as a consequence.

In the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale, Aegon tells Larys Strong that Sunfyre is dead. It seems that this has confirmed the golden dragon’s fate, and it’s heartbreaking when this could have been avoided.

Sunfyre didn’t die at Rook’s Rest in Fire & Blood

In the narrative shift, Sunfyre suffered severe injuries at Rook’s Rest instead of making a full recovery. Meleys inflicted such damage on Sunfyre’s wing during their fight that it was almost torn off. This event transpired in the battle at Rook’s Rest as depicted in House of the Dragon. Consequently, Sunfyre was unable to fly for a considerable period, and Criston Cole and his men took over feeding him sheep since he had consumed all the remains left after Rook’s Rest.

In this scenario, Sunfyre engages in another fight following Aegon’s departure from King’s Landing. This confrontation takes place at Dragonstone, where Sunfyre plays a pivotal role in determining the outcome for Rhaenyra.

It seems the story arcs involving Sunfyre might pass to other characters in “House of the Dragon”. It’s plausible that Cole didn’t inform everyone about Sunfyre’s survival, or perhaps Sunfyre was thought to be dead following the events. However, there’s a chance we’ll discover that Sunfyre is still alive somewhere, potentially leading to Aegon meeting him again in “House of the Dragon” Season 3.
