Did that crazy scene really just happen on Doctor Odyssey?! (and what does it mean?)

As a longtime fan of medical dramas, I must admit that Doctor Odyssey has taken a wild turn with their latest episode! The unexpected “throuple” between Max, Avery, and Tristan is a bold move that’s certainly keeping us on our toes.

Doctor Odyssey might have surprised fans with an unexpected romantic angle! How could this change the course of the series?

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Doctor Odyssey Episode 6

Ever since the debut of “Doctor Odyssey,” I’ve been captivated by the unfolding love triangle involving Max (Joshua Jackson), our newest ship doctor, and his nurses, Avery (Phillipa Soo) and Tristan (Sean Teale). In the opening episode, Max confessed to knowing that Tristan harbored feelings for Avery, a claim that Tristan didn’t dispute. This revelation followed an encounter between Max and Avery, which they both attempted to maintain as strictly professional.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the intriguing romantic twist that’s been unfolding for some time now. It seems Avery is acutely aware of the feelings harbored by both men, and she’s skillfully navigating this complex situation. The latest episode took an unexpected turn when the ship hosted a grand wedding. In a heart-wrenching revelation, Avery admitted that she had once been married, but on their honeymoon, she discovered her new husband was unfaithful to her, with none other than their mutual best friend.

At the wedding, typical problems arose such as the couple finding themselves in an awkward situation and the mother of the bride (Margo Martindale) falling gravely ill with severe sunburn. This led to Max and Avery being persuaded to stand in for the bride and groom during rehearsals, which infuriated Tristan. Additionally, the bride (Kelsea Ballerini) experienced an adverse reaction to a weight-loss medication she was taking to fit into her wedding dress.

The mischief ceased when Eric, the groom, arrived carrying the same case of ringworm as the best man. This led doctors to speculate that the two were intimate. Eric admitted to being a sex addict, potentially exposing many others. In a state of distress, he leapt from the ship, with Captain Massey informing the passengers about the incident. Additionally, it was disclosed that the bride had been aware of her future husband’s issues and was actually involved with the best man.

How did we get the wild “throuple” in Doctor Odyssey?

Following all the excitement, Avery and I (Tristan) made our way to the ship’s kitchen, where we decided to enjoy the leftover wedding cake that wasn’t needed anymore. Max happened upon us there, and he mused about life’s brevity before pouring some champagne for the three of us as we lounged by the pool.

It became clear what they desired in their lives, a list of wishes, and Avery and Max were taken aback to discover that Tristan had never been involved in a threesome. They moved towards Max’s cabin for additional drinks, chatted, and then the topic of a threesome came up. Avery suggested it, saying, “I’m open to it,” before inviting Tristan for a prolonged kiss. As Max observed, Avery finally said, “Come and join us.

It appears that Doctor Odyssey is, in fact, bringing together the characters Max, Avery, and Tristan in an unusual romantic situation, which promises to be quite intriguing moving forward. Tristan has long harbored feelings for Avery, so this development is a wish fulfilled for him. Avery, on the other hand, might view this as nothing more than a brief romance, leaning more towards Max. As for Max, his feelings in this trio are yet to be determined.

What could happen next on the series?

It’s uncertain if they can keep their professionalism following this incident, as it might strangely draw them closer together. Moreover, Massey is likely to disapprove of the situation and potentially cause trouble for them if he finds out.

The scene further fuels the popular fan speculation that the entire series might be a dream experienced by Max, while he’s undergoing treatment for COVID-19. Given how a doctor would typically not date both his nurses and the overall bizarre nature of the plot, it’s easy to understand why one might consider it as a dream scenario.

Despite an unexpectedly passionate detour, Dr. Odyssey’s narrative has fans buzzing with anticipation, eager to follow where this exciting voyage leads!

Doctor Odyssey airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
